it's important to support the Orthodox
community to ensure the growth of
Judaism," Debbie said.

The bright, inviting shop boasts a
4,000-square-foot selling floor, where
clothing and colorful baby accessories
and toys are attractively displayed
among the furniture selections. The
Sterns' son-in-law, architect Warren
Samberg, helped with the design and
layout of the store, which carries baby
clothing sized from newborn to 2
years old.
Their lines are mostly made in
America, but the shop does have a
selection of garments from Spain,
England and France. Bris outfits and
christening gowns are popular items
as well.
Beautiful Beginnings also has a
large inventory of children's books,
including the well-known Goodnight
Moon. "We also carry the more
modern version — Goodnight iPad,"
Debbie said with a smile. "That's a big
seller!"
Some of the unusual toys displayed
include a miniature puppet theater,
the "Lollacup" (a sipping cup and
straw set featured on Shark Tank),
Amish-crafted wooden rocking hors-
es, and cookbooks and utensils for
small children.
Debbie also pointed out a set of
Hebrew letter blocks, which are made
in Grand Rapids. "I always look for
local items we can offer; she said.

She noted their years in the fur-
niture business provided a learning
experience for her and Mickey, but it
was not without its difficulties.
"When my father passed away in
1970, and my mother and I were try-
ing to run the business, we realized
there was a definite drawback to being
a working woman. At that time, we
weren't accepted in the industry:'
Debbie said with pride how times
have changed, as she pointed to a
framed article from Crain's Detroit
Business in 1998, naming Moss &
Associates one of the 25 leading
woman-owned businesses.
As grandparents and owners of
Beautiful Beginnings, both expressed
what's best about this business.
"My position at Beautiful
Beginnings gives me the opportu-
nity to be an integral part of young
children's formative years:' Mickey
said. "Our large selection of clothing,
furniture, books and educational toys
provides comfort. It's a privilege and a
pleasure to play an instrumental role
in the life of a child:'
Added Debbie, "I especially love
sharing the joy that's created when
people come in to choose just the
right gift. The excitement of custom-
ers who give our special items to
friends and family is a wonderful feel-
ing to share:' *
