In 1996, U-M and Interlochen Arts
Academy grad Aaron Dworkin,
a violinist himself, founded the
Detroit-based Sphinx Organization
to encourage the participation
of blacks and Latinos in classi-
cal music, under the direction of
special artistic adviser Yo-Yo Ma.
Sphinx Virtuosi, one of the organi-
zation's programs, is a conductor-
less ensemble of soloists who
tour annually, making stops at
Carnegie Hall and Chicago's Harris
Theater. At 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct.
10, the Sphinx Virtuosi (featuring
the Catalyst Quartet, shown) per-
forms a free concert at the Berman
Center for Performing Arts at the

Novelist Jackie Collins died on Sept.
19, age 77. She was the younger
sister of actress Joan Collins, 82.
The daughter of a Jewish father and
non-Jewish mother, she was raised
secular and remained so; actor
Martin Milner (Adam-12; Route 66)
died on Sept. 6, age 83. His father
was Jewish; and actor Jack Larson
(Jimmy Olson on the 1950s TV show,
Superman) died on Sept. 20, age 87.
His mother was Jewish.
