NIGHTCAP

Column From A `F---ing Jew'

By Harry Kirsbaum

he second Republican debate is in
the books and this is what we've
_ learned:
Marco Rubio may be intelligent and
knowledgeable about the issues, but
he's no HennyYoungman. His opening
joke about bringing his own water to
drought-stricken California fell flat.
Jeb! defended his brother and hasn't
smoked pot in 40 years, but he looked
like he could have used a drink standing
next to Donald Trump for three hours.
Dr. Ben Carson seemed to have lost
his mojo.
Carly Fiorina can bring it.
Chris Christie brought it once when
he chastised Trump and Fiorina about
arguing about their businesses.
Five other candidates will probably
drop out within the next few months.
And then there's Mr. Trump, who,
when he wasn't making personal at-
tacks, went silent for huge tracts of time
when actual issues were being debated.
His final comment of being proud to
share the stage with everyone seemed
rather un-Trump-like.

But, as is the custom in this day and
age, events don't happen until social
media has its say. Back in the day, they
were called the peanut gallery because
their opinion meant so little. But now
that millions of people from famous,
to not-so, to never-will-be, can post or
tweet their views to all their friends or
followers in real time, with real malice,
the event itself can become secondary.
I was not surprised at the comments
that author, Trump-supporter and right-
wingnut Ann Coulter tweeted during
the closing minutes of the debate. I was
just surprised she said it out loud.
Coulter showed a sliver of those
feelings in 2007 when she appeared
on a CNBC talk show and told Donnie
Deutsch, the Jewish host, that"we want
to see Jews perfected" by becoming
Christians.
But on this debate night, obviously
miffed about the number of candidates
who invoked support for Israel in their
closing comments describing what
America would look like after their
presidency, Coulter, who had just weeks

Cruz, Huckabee Rubio all mentioned
ISRAEL in their response to: "What will
AMERICA look like after you are
president."

ago introduced Trump to a raucous
crowd in Iowa, tweeted:
"How many f---ing Jews do these
people think there are in the United
States?"
And there it is. A statement usually
spoken, a feeling usually shared behind
closed doors when Jews aren't present.
I know that not every Christian feels
this way, but just look at the animosity
toward religious minorities and people
of color seen in many Trump support-
ers. When shouts of"White Power"
have been heard in the background
of alcohol-fueled rallies; when Trump
takes questions from an audience
member asking what he's going to do
about our Muslim president and those
Muslim training camps in America; and
when many of Coulter's Twitter follow-
ers, #15tandWithAnn, followed up with
even more hateful screeds against Jews,

one has to wonder how"welcome"a
Jew can really feel in a group like that.
Remember that the evangelical right
think of Jews as a cog in the wheel of
their salvation. That they won't get to
heaven until every one of us Jews in the
diaspora moves back to our homeland
in Israel as part of the End of Days
scenario. Jerusalem must belong to
the Jews, and all Jews must be in Israel
before the battle of good versus evil can
begin.
Yes, Huckabee and Cruz and Rubio
and Christie all mentioned their support
of Israel, but Coulter didn't cite "f---ing
Israel supporters" in her tweet, she cited
a minority of"f---ing Jews:'
Coulter has always been hate-filled
and ignorant, but she's not irrelevant.
Just look at her followers.
Don't ever forget that.
Never forget.
