Tom Violante, owner of Holiday Market in Royal Oak, and son-in-law Craig
Mangold stand near the store's kosher section.
county beefed up their Jewish and kosher
offerings after Farm Fresh Market in Oak
Park closed more than a year ago. Farm
Fresh had an entire section devoted to
kosher groceries, frozen and refrigerated
foods, and wine, as well as a full-service
meat department. The space remains
unoccupied.
A half-mile from One Stop, the Kroger
on Greenfield between 9 and 10 Mile
roads now has a kosher meat case offer-
ing Empire chicken and a limited number
of Meal Mart brand beef products.
Manager Robert McNeilly said the
store will have kosher Empire turkeys for
Thanksgiving.
Holiday Market on Main Street, north
of 10 Mile Road in Royal Oak, has many
loyal Jewish customers from Huntington
Woods.
"When a customer asks for something,
we get it:' said owner Tom Violante, who
started the store as a corner market in
1953.
Violante said Sid Hiller, founder of
Hiller's Market, was his mentor. "His
vision exceeded everyone else in the gro-
cery business," he said.
Since Hiller's was sold, Violante has
added a full shelf of Osem products
made in Israel and started carrying fresh
Empire chicken.
He already had a grinder for fish —
something not every supermarket offers
— and is planning to install another one
just for kosher fish.
He's also planning to add more fro-
zen kosher products, such as gefilte fish
loaves.
Holiday Market also has a large selec-
tion of kosher wine.
"Every day customers ask for certain
items, and we're happy to get them:' said
Violante. "If I don't have it, you don't need
it!"
Trader Joe's stores in Jewish com-
munities, including those at Maple and
Telegraph in Bloomfield Hills and on
Woodward Avenue north of 11 Mile Road
in Royal Oak, carry a limited variety of
Empire chicken and the company's own
private brand of kosher beef products,
certified by Triangle K.
The company lists all its kosher prod-
ucts on its website, www.traderjoes.com .
The Meijer's store at 12 Mile and
Telegraph roads has had a small section
of kosher poultry and meat for years, as
well as a kosher food section.
Costco stores in Commerce and
Bloomfield Townships carry some fresh
Empire chicken and Tomer brand kosher
meat products, certified by Triangle K.
Most Costco stores also carry frozen
Empire Cornish hens and skinless, bone-
less chicken breasts and Hebrew National
hotdogs.
