Wooing Jewish Shoppers
Phil Kassa, owner of Heartland
Marketplace at 12 Mile and Farmington
Road in Farmington Hills, says Hiller's
closing has spurred him to try again to
appeal to Jewish customers.
Kassa said he tried to attract a Jewish
clientele when he opened the store eight
years ago, but lost out to Hiller's. "They
knew the customer; I didn't," said Kassa,
who is Chaldean.
Heartland recently added 8 feet of shelf
space for kosher products to the 12 feet
the store previously had and increased its
frozen kosher offerings from one door to
three. Kassa said he's also started stocking
Empire kosher poultry.
At Market Square, Inkster and Walnut
Lake in West Bloomfield, Store Manager
Toma Mattia is increasing the shelf space
devoted to kosher food in response to
customer demand.
"We definitely want to attract the
Hiller's customer; he said.
The store carries some kosher wine,
but its only kosher meat product is
Hebrew National hot dogs.
Even stores far from Maple and Orchard
Lake are vying for Hiller's customers.
One Stop Kosher Foods on the border
of Southfield and Oak Park actually was
a Hiller's Market until 2000. Now owner
Shlomo Goldman is getting ready to start
a major overhaul of the store's interior,
including new floors, lighting and food
cases. He hopes to have it completed by
Passover.
Everything in the store is kosher, so
shoppers have no concerns there. But
the store is trying to bring in more of the
brands that Hiller's carried, Goldman said.
The store also has started a grab-and-
go section with ready-made salads and
wraps.
These days, so many grocery prod-
ucts are certified kosher that even an
all-kosher market has to work hard for
customers' loyalty, Goldman said. One
Stop is unique in having an in-house, full-
service meat department, run by Superior
Kosher Meat. The other markets that
carry kosher meat and poultry have only
a limited selection.
The only other full-service kosher
butcher in the Detroit area is Harvard
Row, just north of the former-Hiller's-
now-Kroger on Orchard Lake Road.
One Stop's Goldman is hoping his
weekly delivery service will attract
customers who live far from his store.
Orders of at least $50 can be phoned,
faxed or emailed in as late as Tuesday
noon for Tuesday afternoon delivery in
Farmington Hills and West Bloomfield.
There's no delivery charge for orders over
$100; for orders between $50 and $100,
the delivery charge is $5.
"If there's sufficient demand, we'll
expand the delivery service," he said.
