Wish Kids, Team Alex inspire
grieving brother and son
of Jeff Surnow.

Robert Sklar I Contributing Editor

A

nguish has festered since the stunning
death of his brother, Jeff, in a bicycle
accident in Hawaii on March 1. But
Michael Surnow gained strength from a surprising
source: the Wish Kids who greeted him at the fin-
ish of the 2015 Wish-A-Mile (WAM) benefit bicycle
ride hosted by Make-A-Wish Michigan.
The West Bloomfield brothers lived on the same
street, raised their
families together
and worked togeth-
er at the Surnow
Company, a
Birmingham com-
mercial real estate
firm. They were
close socially and
shared a joy for fun
things.
Jeff had ridden
WAM and support-
ed it in a big way
for 12 of Michael's
14 years as a rider.

aldand County supermarkets are scrambling to
attract Jewish customers in the wake of the recent
acquisition of Hiller's Market stores by the Kroger Co.
The Hiller's at Maple and Orchard Lake had many loyal
Jewish shoppers in the Farmington Hills-West Bloomfield
area because the store carried a wide range of kosher, Israeli
and Jewish ethnic foods.
Brian Brazzil, manager of that
Hiller's location and now manager
of the Kroger there, said shoppers
will find the selection "frighten-
ingly similar."
In fact, the kosher, Israeli and Jewish ethnic food section
at that store has been expanded by 64 linear feet, said Ken
McClure, former COO of Hiller's Markets, who has been
handling the transition from Hiller's stores to Kroger stores.
He's been with Kroger for slightly more than 18 months and
is serving as customer communications manager for Kroger's
Michigan Division.
Kosher sections also have been expanded at the Kroger
stores that were formerly Hiller's stores at Haggerty and 14
Mile and in Ann Arbor.
