T
he first day of summer has now
passed. Schools are out, the days
are warm — it is time for the
kids to go to camp. I wondered — when
did the Jewish News first begin to cover
some news or advertisements from sum-
mer camps?
Well, from the first year the IN was
published (1942) and continuing up
to the present day, readers will find
advertisements about and reports from
summer camps. In recent times, the JN
has devoted special sections to summer
camps in December and February.

advertisements for camps that some read-
ers may have spent time at when they
were children. For example, have you ever
heard of Camp Mehia? This was a camp
in the Michigan resort area known as

The camp was opened in 1935 on
the shores of Wamplers Lake and man-
aged by beloved Movsas and Shulamith
Berkovich. In 1951, it was sold to the
Detroit United Methodist Church and still
exists today as the Judson Collins Center.
And, it still has a camp for kids.
