EUGENE MERIN, 95, a
former Detroiter of
Sunrise, Fla., passed
away peacefully May 16,
2015, in Florida. His
charm, wit and unique
sense of humor delight-
ed everyone he met.
Eugene immi-
grated to the U.S. from
Czechoslovakia when
his uncle began to foresee the impend-
ing events in Europe. He attended high
school in the U.S., while working for
his uncle Morris Rosenberg, one of the
founders of Congregation B'nai Moshe.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army and
sent to Normandy. After the war, while
still in uniform, he got permission to
return to his hometown to search for his
family. Although his father perished, his
mother and sister survived Auschwitz,
and they were able to have an emotional
reunion.
In 1948, Eugene married Maritza
Hartman. They spent nine years in
Venezuela near her family and returned
to Detroit to raise their daughters. He
worked closely with his lifelong friend
James Kovacs at James Crystal Mfg. Co.
After a happy marriage of 53 years,
Maritza passed away in 2002. Eugene
found a loving partner in Judit Wolf
of Mt. Clemens for 12 years and
became the beloved "Mr. Handsome" of
Congregation Beth Tephilath Moses, as
well as a life member of B'nai Moshe.
He is survived by Judit Wolf; daugh-
ters, Darlene Merin-Zietz and Debbie
Merin; grandchildren, Jonathan and
Jessica Zietz; nephew and niece, Walter
Brown and Joyce Brown Davidson; Judit's
