run and walk on Orchard Lake Road.

T

he annual Walk for Israel, a
community celebration of
the establishment of the State
of Israel in 1948, drew support from
more than 2,000 participants on sunny
May 17 at Temple Shir Shalom in West
Bloomfield.
For the third year, the event also
included the Run for Israel 5K Family
Fun Run earlier in the morning.
Programs for the event included
activities for children, an informal
sing-along, pizza and salad lunch from
Jerusalem Pizza, booths from Jewish
organizations and a surprise presenta-
tion to Andre Douville, Shir Shalom
executive director, for serving 10 years

Lake Road to show united support for
Israel. They drew honks from many
drivers along the route.
During the event, Danielle Brickner,
22, of Lansing and her mother, Wendy
Brickner of Walled Lake, received
a call from their brother and son,
Ryan Brickner, an Eastern Michigan
University student who was in Israel
on a Birthright trip.
"It is pretty cool walking for Israel
when Ryan is in Jerusalem:' Danielle
said. "Our support is here and there,
