JCRC Board Seeking
New Nominations
The Jewish Community Relations
Council is accepting nominations for its
2015-2016 board of directors.
Candidates should be leaders within
the Detroit Jewish community who are
able to make a commitment to the pub-
lic affairs agenda that the JCRC pursues
on behalf of its member organizations
and the entire Jewish community.
To nominate a candidate, contact the
JCRC at (248) 642-5393 or download a
nomination form from the JCRC's web-
site, www.detroitjcrc.org .
Nominations must be received by
Monday, June 1.
All nominations will be submitted to
the JCRC's Nominating Committee for
consideration. The slate of officers and
board members will be announced over
the summer and voted on at the JCRC
annual meeting.
Local Dentists Provide
Free Service June 13
Realizing that many area residents do
not have access to dental care, Oral
& Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of
Michigan in Farmington Hills, 32905 W.
12 Mile Road, will offer services at no
charge on Saturday, June 13, from 7:30
a.m.-3 p.m.
The first 200 people in line are
guaranteed to see one of the dentists.
Appointments are on a first-come, first-
served basis. More than 250 patients
were treated last year and nearly
$100,000 in services was provided.
Attendees will have their choice of
receiving a filling, an extraction or a
cleaning. The event, "Dentistry from the
Heart:' is being offered by Drs. William
Ruskin, Vejayan Krishnan and Aaron
Ruskin.
"It all comes down to wanting to bet-
ter the community we live and work in,"
William Ruskin said. "The services we
will provide that day will help patients
with more than their teeth. They will
get renewed self-confidence to go along
with a nicer smile."
More than 200 similar "Dentistry
from the Heart" events have taken place
in virtually every state under the non-
profit organization of the same name.
More than 50,000 people have received
free dental care since the event began.
Visit dentistryfromtheheart.org for
details. ❑

T
he 70th anniversary of the end
of World War II in Europe was
commemorated on May 8, 1945.
Did you know, however, that women also
flew airplanes for the American Armed
Forces? Sylvia Granader was one of these
special pilots.
Granader began her flying career in
Wayne University's Civilian Pilot Training
Program, where she was the sole female
student. She was then one of only 1,074
of 250,000 applicants carefully chosen
for the Women Air Force Service Pilots
(WASPs) and, it is believed, the only
Jewish woman.
WASPs were considered noncombat
flyers. Their roles often consisted of
transporting supplies and airplanes to
and from combat zones, and flying with
targets trailing their airplanes for target
practice for the men who would fly mis-
sions against the enemy. Two WASPs
were shot down during these practices.
WASPs were not officially recognized as
veterans until 1977. Surviving WASPs
