Sammys' Bonds Ruled Out
Turning In Their Brothers
I am writing regarding Arthur
Horwitz's column titled "Trashing A
Resort — And A Fraternity" (April
2, page 52). I am not sure I have ever
seen such a one-sided column that
clearly doesn't even attempt to tell
both sides of the story.
The column is so obviously driven
by Alan Greenberg that I was shocked
to see Arthur claim to be the author.
Did he even read the remainder of
the "email sent to over 200 people"
that he referenced?
I was on that email and it was
embarrassing on so many levels, and
many people responded in support
of Josh and the other brothers. Didn't
see that mentioned in the column.
Did Arthur even attempt to contact
anyone at the fraternity to get a com-
ment? Doubt it.
As a 2010 Michigan graduate and
member of Sigma Alpha Mu, I am
disgusted at the actions of the frater-
nity that weekend and clearly do not
condone it. However, to put all the
blame on the fact that they did not
hand select a sub-set of the fraternity
to turn in is ridiculous.
In the column: "Were students des-

tined for law school, medical school,
Wall Street or Silicon Valley — and
the resulting greatness — petrified
that if this act of vandalism and
destruction was linked to them, their
career trajectories would be jeopar-
dized?"
Um, clearly yes. Is your column
really implying that this was the
wrong decision? As important as
a brotherhood is, the individuals'
futures are more important. The
brothers' decision to stick together
as one further shows how strong the
bond is that they formed. Despite
incentives to turn each other in, they
didn't.
I know I wouldn't, and I challenge
Arthur and whoever approved this
column to think about what they
would actually do in a similar situ-
ation. I would guess they weren't in
fraternities.

Sugarhill is currently being presented.
The story is a powerful and sensi-
tive story of bigotry in the South in
the early 1940s. The acting as well as
the scenery are a real testimony to
the quality of the JET.
Saturday night's crowd gave the
play a wonderful standing ovation. Be
sure not to miss Sugarhill.

Israeli Soldiers' Tour
Gave Portrait Of Reality
On April 16-17, the sixth annual
StandWithUs (SWU) Israeli Soldiers
Tour visited Michigan and met with
more than 100 adults and students in
West Bloomfield, Southfield, Detroit
and Ann Arbor.
In each location, Israeli Defense
Forces (IDF) Lt. Col. Hen Mazzig and
Capt. Matan Katzman revealed their
heartfelt respect for human rights
while employing a variety of means
to secure Israelis and Palestinians
from terrorist attacks. They instilled
pride in the high moral values of the
IDF for those fortunate to hear their
stories and view their meaningful, if
sometimes disturbing, Powerpoint
presentations.
StandWithUs-Michigan is most
grateful to the following organiza-
tions that generously co-hosted the
tour: Detroit Jewish News; Institute
for Retired Professionals Current
Events 1 Discussion Group; Greater
Detroit Chapter of Hadassah; Jewish
Community Relations Council;
National Council of Jewish Women,
Greater Detroit Section; Hillel of
Metro Detroit and University of
Michigan Hillel.
Hen and Matan were accompanied
by Liz Brough, SWU Midwest High
School Outreach Coordinator.
