Jewish War Vets Give
Gifts For War Memorials
Recently, two organizations were
on the receiving end of generous
gifts from the executive board of the
Jewish War Veterans of Michigan
(JWV).
The board presented a check and
letter of endorsement in support of
the building of the Michigan WWII
Legacy Memorial to be located in
Royal Oak's Memorial Park. The
Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial
will be a year-round destination loca-
tion that will honor those Michigan
veterans who served on the war
front and the dedicated citizens of
Michigan who worked tirelessly on
the home front.
The memorial will include land,
air and sea scenes highlighted by
full-size statues depicting the war
front and home front; a Walk of
Honor with donated brick pavers;
and an interactive map of Michigan
that will highlight our state's con-
tributions of war time goods and
services.
Memorial board president Debi
Hollis and board member Alan
Muskovitz accepted the check and
Hadassah Slates Women's
Heart Health Symposium
Hadassah Greater Detroit will hold
a "Heart-Throbbing Woman's Heart
Health Symposium" on Thursday,
May 28, 10 a.m.-2:15 p.m. at the
Birmingham Community House, 380
S. Bates.
Heart disease kills more women
than all forms of cancer combined.
Women's heart attack symptoms differ
from men's. Research focuses mostly
on the physiology of men, and women
are harder to diagnose.
These issues will be addressed by
keynote speakers Pam Marcovitz,
M.D., director of the Ministrelli
Women's Heart Center at Beaumont
Hospital, Royal Oak, and Shalini Modi,
M.D., service chief of cardiology at
Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital.
endorsement from Lawrence Berry,
Commander, Jewish War Veterans
Department of Michigan. For more
information about the project and
how to donate, visit www.
michiganWW2memorial.org .
In a separate JWV meeting,
Berry, with fellow officers and
Shirley Marshall from the Women's
Auxiliary, presented a check to
the Vietnam Veterans of America,
Detroit Chapter 9, who are working
with the Veterans Memorial Park of
Detroit Inc. on an ambitious memo-
rial to honor all veterans, not just
those who served in the Vietnam era.
Its mission is to create as many as
25 individual stations in the heart of
Detroit, each representing a specific
U.S. military campaign involving
Detroit-area military personnel.
The Veterans Memorial Park of
Detroit Inc committee is in active
negotiations to secure a final site
for the memorial. Al Opra, VMPoD
president and VVA Detroit Chapter
9 President Paul Palazzolo, accepted
the check on behalf of the project.
For information, contact Mike Sand
at 1968vet@gmail.com.
The program will be moderated by
Rhonda Walker of WDIV-TV.
Attendees will learn the warning
signs of heart disease for women, new
CPR techniques, how to use a defibril-
lator and the proven merits of mindful
thinking.
Julie Feldman, registered dietician
and author, will connect healthy food
choices to the prevention of heart
disease. A heart- healthy lunch will be
served. An optional pre-registration
walk at 9:15 a.m. and pop-up exercises
will illustrate how easy it is to incorpo-
rate movement into everyday lives.
The cost is $45. For information,
