DR. LEONARD DEMAK, passed
away early in the morning of March
14, 2015, at University Medical
Center of Princeton, N.J.
Born in Cincinnati to Dora
(Ferber) Demak and William
Demak, Leonard lived in Detroit,
Louisville and Knoxville before
returning to Detroit as a teenager.
After graduating from Central
High in Detroit, he served in the
Army during World War II as
an infantry instructor and was
discharged as a sergeant in 1946.
Using the GI Bill, he was the first
in his family to graduate from col-
lege, earning bachelor's, master's
and eventually a doctorate degree
in education from Wayne State
University.
Dr. Demak was an eminent edu-
cator, publishing numerous articles
and consulting with various school
districts in Michigan and across
the country. A teacher and school
principal in Highland Park, Mich.,
and later superintendent of schools
in Oak Park, Mich., Dr. Demak
was also a member of a number of
education commissions and advi-
sory boards, and was a member
and later president of the Oak Park
Board of Education. He was also
president of Congregation B'nai
Moshe.
After moving to Monroe
Township, N.J., in 1991, Dr. Demak
was a commissioner of the histori-
cal preservation commission and
continued to pursue his interests
and talents as an artist, woodwork-
er and gardener. He doted on his
wife, children and grandchildren.
Dr. Demak is survived by his
children, Michele Demak Epstein
and Richard Demak; their spous-
es, Jeffrey Epstein and Brenda
Breslauer; grandchildren, Zach,
Adam and Nathan Epstein, and Ella
and Nora Demak.
Dr. Demak was predeceased
by his beloved wife of 60 years,
Eleanore (Yendick) Demak; and
cherished brother, Morton R.
Demak.
Services and interment were
held at Floral Park Cemetery.
Arrangements were made
by Orland's Ewing Memorial
