Andrew Calm is making a "racquet" again
on the tennis court.
The Western Michigan University
junior from West Bloomfield High School
clinched a 6-1 win over Youngstown State
for the Broncos on Feb. 28 at West Hills
Athletic Club in Kalamazoo when he won
the No. 6 singles match against Victor
Pereira with a second-set tiebreaker.
Calm also teamed with Marc Shideler to
win at No. 3 doubles. That victory tied the
doubles portion of the dual match. Western
Michigan went on to win the doubles
point.
It was the eighth-straight home win for
the Broncos (10-3), who are ranked No. 68
in the country, not bad for a school in the
Midwest. Calm and his teammates were in
Florida last weekend for matches against
Butler, Bethune Cookman and Central
Florida.
Cahn was named the state's "Mr. Tennis"
in 2011 by the Michigan High School
Tennis Coaches Association when he was
a senior at West Bloomfield. He also was a
two-time All-State selection by the coaches
group and he was rated the No. 3 high
school senior tennis prospect in Michigan.
A star in the classroom, too, Cahn was
named to the Mid-American Conference
men's tennis All-Academic team last sea-
son. The pre-business major was honored
for his 3.64 grade point average and 20-13
record in doubles.
Hit Man
Collegiate Baseball newspaper's preseason
NCAA Division III players to watch list
includes Kalamazoo College sophomore
outfielder Ian Kobernick from Berkley
High School.
Last season, the Huntington Woods
resident led Kalamazoo in hits, had three
multiple-hit games and a season-best three
RBIs against Indiana's Trine University.

Jewish Captains
Exhaustive research by reader Dave Wigler
revealed the West Bloomfield High School
hockey team has had at least one Jewish
captain since the 2008-2009 season. Here
they are.
During 2008-2009 and 2009-2010: David
Friedman; 2010-2011: Zach Rogow; 2011-
2012: Max Dubin; 2012-2013 and 2013-
2014: Conner Schram; 2014-2015: Michael
Kolodin and Sean Wigler.
Rogow finished his career as West
Bloomfield's all-time leader scorer with 93
points. Sean Wigler passed him this season
with 104 points.
Division I Icers
A reader asked a while back if there any
area Jewish players in NCAA Division I
men's college hockey. Three were listed by
Jewish Sports Review.
There's Holy Cross junior forward
Brett Lubanski from Farmington Hills,
American International junior defenseman
Brandon Lubin from Commerce Township
and Army freshman Joe Schecter from
Farmington Hills.
Hillel Teams
Organizers of the fifth annual National
Hillel Basketball Tournament at the
University of Maryland were planning last
week to announce the college teams that
have entered the April 17-19 event. A wom-
an's team from the University of Michigan
participated last year. This year, men's
teams from Michigan State University
and Metro Detroit Hillel will play.
The University of Maryland Hillel orga-
nizes the tournament. It's expecting more
than 1,200 participants including 300
players from more than 30 universities.
The three-day event begins with Shabbat
services and dinner and concludes with
two days of basketball.
