FARMINGTON HILLS INTERNISTS
IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE
THEIR RELOCATION TO:
better understand how conflict between
them affects their children, how to
communicate on a positive level, and
how to be flexible and compromise as
co-parents in making decisions about
their children.
However, no such support groups
exist for kids to vent their feelings and
concerns. Peskin-Shepherd hopes to
remove some of the mystique of the
legal aspect of divorce and custody
issues.
"Giving them some answers to their
questions will help them feel like they
have some control over a situation that
seems very much out of their control"
she said.
Traurig said that Schreiber's mitzvah
project "embodies the entire essence
of what it means to be a Jewish adult
because he wants to bring something
helpful to his community.
"Divorce for kids feels like an inner,
silent scream of 'Oh no, why is this
happening to me?"' he said. "I hope the
children in this group come away from
the work they will do here with a feel-
ing that they have replaced any feelings
of isolation and being different with a
sense of commonality and companion-
ship"
Traurig said the discussions would
proceed at the children's pace. Simple
exercises, such as drawing pictures of
their family before, during and after
divorce proceedings, will be used as a
tool to get conversations started.
"Divorce is a difficult passage
because it disrupts the fundamental
basis of the child's psychological lives,
which is attachment to parent and fam-
ily unit," Traurig said. "The group will
serve as a safe space to share; a place to
normalize their feelings"

responsibility, and the chapter officers
were not providing information about
which students were responsible for the
damage.
The document also said "representa-
tives of Sigma Delta Tau have continued
to attempt to distance themselves from
group accountability" magnifying the
university's concerns about the organiza-
tion.
Restitution totaling $25,000 has been
made for damages to 12 privately owned
condominiums at Boyne Highlands dur-
ing a ski trip attended by students from
four other U-M Greek organizations the
same weekend as the Treetops incident.
Members of the Pi Kappa Alpha and
Chi Psi fraternities and Alpha Phi and
Delta Gamma sororities received formal
written reprimands from U-M officials
and will be subject to the same GARP
sanctions imposed on the SAM and SDT
organizations, including the requisite
educational sessions and community
service.
A statement issued by the univer-
sity indicated the students at Boyne
Highlands engaged in "poor event plan-
ning, excessive occupancy of rooms,
and excessive wear and tear resulting in
damage to the facilities" but noted they
"did not engage in malicious destruction
of property and have taken full account-
ability for their actions:'
According to Boyne Highlands man-
agement, there will be no legal action or
further police investigation.
Michigan State Police are continuing
to interview students on the U-M cam-
pus as part of a lengthy investigation to
determine which individuals are respon-
sible for the destruction at Treetops. The
results of the investigation will be turned
over to the Otsego County Prosecutor to
determine whether criminal charges will
be filed.
The GARP sanctions, which were
issued to both SAM and SDT, included
15 hours of community service and
completion of three different types of
education sessions in bystander inter-
vention, risk management and sexual
misconduct prevention.
In addition, members will face social
probation, one-year suspension from the
Interfraternity Council, indefinite exclu-
sion from off campus joint fraternity/
sorority overnight events and comple-
tion of an internal membership review
by the national organization to identify
individuals who are deemed unfit to
continue membership.
Debbie Snyder, executive director
of Sigma Delta Tau, said the sorority's
national organization agrees with the
GARP sanctions but feels the two-year
disciplinary suspension imposed by the
university is excessive, due to a lack of
evidence proving the girls' involvement.
"We firmly believe the university's
sanctions were unreasonable said
Snyder. "We don't believe the girls played
a part in the vandalism, and we believe
they intervened to the best of their abil-
ity given the situation:'
The two-year disciplinary suspen-
sion imposed on SDT removes the
sorority from active membership in
the Panhellenic Association and limits
recruitment and social activities. Service,
educational and philanthropic activities
may be approved on a per-case basis.
Lee Manders, executive director of the
national SAM organization, declined to
comment on the situation.
A letter signed by U-M Dean of
Students Laura Blake Jones said the uni-
versity felt additional sanctions beyond
those imposed by GARP were needed
because the individuals were not taking
