Damaged furniture removed from the rooms at Treetops

Ronelle Grier
Contributing Writer

U

niversity of Michigan has
officially de-recognized
Jewish fraternity Sigma
Alpha Mu (SAM) and imposed a two-
year disciplinary suspension on Sigma
Delta Tau (SDT), a historically Jewish-
based sorority, following extensive
vandalism during a ski trip attended
by members of both Greek organiza-
tions at Treetops resort in Northern
Michigan.
The de-recognition of SAM, which
will be enforced for a minimum of four
years, and the disciplinary measures for
SDT were imposed by the university,
on top of several less severe sanctions
recommended by the Greek Activities
Review Panel (GARP) following a Feb.
11 hearing.
The university is also requiring SAM
and SDT to make full restitution to
Treetops for the damages, in addition
to requesting the national SAM orga-
nization to "take immediate steps to
remove the chapter's charter; according
to a statement from the U-M Office of
Student Life.
More than 40 rooms at Treetops were
severely damaged during a Jan. 16-18
weekend trip attended by about 270
U-M fraternity and sorority members.
Described by Treetops General Manager
Barry Owens as "mindblowing:' the

destruction included smashed furniture,
cupboard doors torn from their hinges,
ruined carpeting, destroyed ceiling tiles,
and hallways filled with debris.
A new estimate from the resort puts
the damages at $430,000, more than
triple the original estimate of $100,000,
and management has expressed concern
about whether full restitution will be
made. Owens attributed the increased
estimate to lost revenue, management
time and damage to the resort's reputa-
tion, in addition to actual repair and
restoration costs.
"This will impact our operation and
we're not big enough to shoulder that
burden:' said Owens, who added, "...
while an investigation [by Michigan
State Police] is ongoing, the university
has stated that they expect the students
who are responsible to make full restitu-
tion to Treetops for the damages. It also
has become evident that the fraternity
representatives have suggested that they
are unwilling to pay for the damage that
they caused the resort:'
Officials at the GARP hearing deter-
mined the students at Treetops violated
several standards of conduct required
for recognized student organizations,
including disregarding health and safety
regulations, defying values stated in their
constitutions and disobeying the law by
participating in underage drinking.
