Annual Cook-Off

Shir Shalom event draws huge crowd to
sample and rate 22 chicken soups.

Elegant estate jewelr9 and

f?"

beautiful one-of-a-kind pieces can

be yours for less than you would imagine

p

erhaps it was the need for
"Jewish penicillin" during
a flu season, but no mat-
ter the reason, Temple Shir Shalom
drew a record crowd of more
than 500 tasters to its fifth annual
Chicken Soup Cook-Off on Jan. 18
at The Corners in West Bloomfield.
Among the 22 entries, the top
People's Choice Award was earned
by Elwin & Co. in Berkley for its
rich Italian chicken soup based on
Chef Elwin Greenwald's "Bubbie
Gratziella's recipe that traveled
from Poland to Sorrento, Italy, to
America" The touch of tomato
paste and the chicken knaidlach

surely gave it the edge.
Judges chose the other win-
ners: Market Square of Bloomfield
(chicken noodle), Steve's Deli (mat-
zah ball) and Cutting Edge Cuisine
(contemporary/white chicken chili)
in the professional category.
In the amateur category, winners
were the Halprin family (chicken
noodle), David Grossman (matzah
ball) and Sharry Fealk (contempo-
rary/Crazy About Rice).
Proceeds from the event go to
two Detroit nonprofits as well
as two Shir Shalom programs.
Terri Cassels Cooper and Rebecca
Bershad co-chaired the event.
