Kudos For Coverage
Of Grosse Pointe Jews

I want

to thank the Jewish News for
its wonderful coverage of the Grosse
Pointe Jewish Council ("East Side Silver
Anniversary:' Dec. 18, page 16). By mak-
ing the metropolitan Jewish community
more aware of our existence, you have per-
formed a real mitzvah.
More often than I would expect, people
react to my mentioning the Grosse Pointe
Jewish Council by saying that their son
or daughter had just moved to the Grosse
Pointes, wants to affiliate with a congrega-

Enroll For Health Care
By Feb. 15 With JFS Help
Open enrollment for healthcare on the
government-run exchanges continues until
Feb. 15, and the Jewish Family Service
Health Care Navigation team is available to
guide people through the enrollment pro-
cess. JFS can also help qualifying people
enroll in Medicaid.
The deadline to sign up for cover-
age beginning Jan. 1 was Dec. 15, but
that doesn't mean enrollment is closed.
Consumers who enroll by Jan. 15 will be
covered beginning Feb. 1, and those who
enroll between Jan. 16 and the Feb. 15
close of open enrollment will be covered
beginning March 1.
Adults who don't enroll in a qualifying
plan may face tax penalties in 2015, and
subsidies and tax credits are available for
many consumers. Call (248) 592-2300 or
email resourcecenter@jfsdetroit.org to
schedule an appointment.

tion, but didn't know there was an orga-
nized Jewish community in the area. You
have helped these people find a convenient
location for fulfilling their Judaism.
I also want to reassure your readers that
while we hold services in a church build-
ing, before each service our members
transform the sanctuary into an appropri-
ate setting for Jewish worship. We cover
all Christian symbols and set up our aron
kodesh (Torah ark), ner tamid (eternal
light) and Israeli Flag.

Temple Israel Acts As
Local Homeless Shelter
A local synagogue, mosque and several
churches are uniting New Year's week to
ensure the more than 30 men, women
and children enrolled in the emer-
gency shelter program of South Oakland
Shelter (SOS) have a safe, warm place to
reside.
Temple Israel of West Bloomfield,
Muslim Unity Center of Bloomfield Hills,
Birmingham Unitarian Church and other
churches are working side-by-side to pro-
vide the space, food and volunteers.
"We are excited about this partner-
ship:' said Tracie Fienman from Temple
Israel. "We already host SOS once
annually for the full week leading up to
Christmas. It is one of our biggest social
action projects of the year:' For more
information on SOS, visit www.

ver hear of the Peanut Butter
Players, Detroit's historic pro-
fessional youth theater corn-

pany?
Jo Anne Lamun founded the Peanut
Butter Players in Detroit in 1985. For
the next six years, this theater company
provided a venue for local Detroit youth
interested in the performing arts and was
the only professional children's theater in
the Metro Detroit region.
During its tenure in the city, the Peanut
Butter Players put on performances such
as PT: The Life Story of Barnum, You're
a Good Man Charlie Brown and Happy
Holidays from the Heart.
Moreover, the theatertroupe performed
at such venues as the New Center One
building and the Jewish Community
Center. While admittedly, the company
had a short run in the city — it relocated
to Colorado when Director Lamun moved
there in 1991 — the Peanut Butter Players
was a way for children to have some fun
and, perhaps, take their first step toward a
