Aleksandr Mikhailovich had given up on JDate, but met his fiancee, Olga
Shkundina, at the last minute. He says he'd definitely go with Jswipe if he
were still looking.
ove over, JDate. There's a new
matchmaker in town.
JSwipe, a free mobile
application for iPhone that uses location-
based software to find Jewish singles
around the world, is catching on in
Metro Detroit and is quickly replac-
ing the paid subscription model of
matchmaking sites such as JDate.com or
SawYouAtSinai.com.
"What's great about JSwipe is that
it makes it easier to find people who
don't go to the bars or who are new to
town," said a 32-year-old teacher from
Southfield who declined to give her
name. "I can be at a restaurant, take out
my phone and find people in the vicinity
whom I would never have met other-
wise'
The drawback to JSwipe, she said, was
that it's still new "So after a while, in
Detroit, you run out of photos to swipe,
and therefore out of people to match
with. But I see more people popping
up now, so that's a sign it's getting more
popular:'
Aleksandr Mikhailovich, a 28-year old
accountant in West Bloomfield, agreed
that the subscription model for tradi-
tional matchmaking websites has lost its
appeal.
"I had become very jaded by JDate
and was about to get off of it and, at the
last minute, met my now-fiancee' he
said. "I got lucky, but it also fails. I had
two previous relationships that did not
work out:'
If he were starting out again, he said,
JSwipe would appeal to him on two
fronts.
"It's free, and you could find people
beyond Detroit's tight-knit community.
A high percentage of long-distance rela-
tionships don't work out, but you could
meet someone in Grand Rapids. Who
knows?"
JSwipe launched in April 2014, after
founder David Yarus, 28, determined
that a Jewish version of Tinder, which
uses Facebook profiles to provide pic-
tures for others to view and GPS technol-
ogy to match with anyone in a circum-
scribed radius, would go a long way to
connecting Jewish millennia's.
"Millennia's want a fun way to chat
with people instantly, while they're
online at Starbucks or at brunch with
friends:' he said. "They want immediate
gratification and a sleek, free, mobile
experience that extends across the entire
dating space. They're not going to pay for
older technology and an older user base:'
User Growth
Based in New York City, JSwipe boasts
120,000 users in 70 countries. The
