majority of users are in their 20s,
with some Generation Xers thrown
into the mix. Facebook verifies that
participants are at least 18 years of
age, and users can customize their
experience by filtering for denomina-
tion, kosher status and sexual prefer-
ence. Once a set of users match, they
have 18 days to interact before the
match expires.
"The reason for this is we want
people to take action, not just accu-
mulate a list," Yams explained. "We
want the online interaction to result
in an actual date.'
Yarus, who used JSwipe himself
when he recently moved from the
Upper West Side to Brooklyn, said
he has heard of two engagements so
far and several relationships resulting
from JSwipe. 'And that's just from
people who report:' he said.
He has even heard stories of people
using JSwipe to enrich their travel
experiences. "You can literally swipe
your way into a new community
and create a whole new network of
friends:' he said.
The company currently employs
five people and has closed a round
of angel investment, which will help
the company release the application
on Android phones this month and
add a requested "height feature The

of publicity, but mentions on Time.
com, CNET.com and by Julie Bowen
of Modern Family on Jimmy Kimmel
Live! have helped the application
grow in popularity.
"That there is excitement in the
community bringing JSwipe to light
without a concerted public relations
effort proves that it's working:' Yarus
said. He says that he hears very little
criticism that JSwipe is a "hookup"
app, and that those who say they have
had a bad experience with JSwipe do
not represent the user experience as
a whole.
"What I hear is that we have tons
of people dating across all denomina-
tions, and that it is taking over Greek
life on college campuses:' he said.
Among his plans to grow JSwipe
are a college campus student ambas-
sador program and offline events
such as Shabbat potluck lunches in
New York City's Central Park.
Here in Detroit, the teacher, who
is committed to marrying Jewish,
is optimistic, even though a recent
JSwipe date didn't work out.
"The app makes sense, and that it's
free is appealing," she said. "Nobody
wants to pay to date. Even though my
last date didn't go the way I wanted it
to, I'm sticking with it. I just started
chatting with someone new this
morning:'
