hint of the creative force that
is Annabel Cohen is evident
in her recipes for this news-
paper's "On the Menu" column. Those
paying attention over the past few
weeks could have prepared a complete
Thanksgiving dinner using her acces-
sible, delicious ideas.
Annabel is a travel, food and life-
style writer who also blogs and lec-
tures. She's a cooking instructor, who
donates her time and talent to raise
money for charities, such as Jewish
Senior Life, ORT and JVS. She's been
a celebrity judge deciding on Best
Cholent at Temple Emanu-El in Oak
Park and Best Kugel at Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills.
Annabel also judged on the Travel
Channel's Food Wars, pitting Detroit
rivals Lafayette Coney Island against
American Coney Island (American
won!).
In 2003, Annabel co-authored
Eating for Acid Reflux and last year
created the recipes for Fast Diets for

Dummies.
Now, however, she's returned
to an early passion by starting a
catering company: Annabel Cohen
Cooks Detroit (ACCD). Her shop
is on Orchard Lake Road, west of
Middlebelt, in Sylvan Lake. Annabel
sold her original, self-named catering
business decades ago.
A former advertising director,
Annabel has traveled widely since
opting for the freelancer's life. She's
been six times to Italy and France,
and sometimes cooked in restaurants
there.
"One of my best trips was going to
Japan without a suitcase Annabel
said. "I bought everything I needed
from vending machines:'
In recent years, she handled catering
at Birmingham Temple in Farmington
Hills and prepared Saturday Kiddush
lunch in the kosher kitchen at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield.
Annabel's success in catering for
friends and their referrals over the last
couple of years earned her the 2014
Caterer of the Year honor from Hour
magazine. Seeing demand increasing
for her services, Annabel said that
earlier this year, "I was at a fork in the
road. I needed to either go big, or go

home"
At age 53, she summoned the cour-
age to lease a location for her business.
The deep backroom of the former
Tomato Kitchen features professional-
grade kitchen equipment and plenty of
prep counters and shelves.
For design, Annabel called upon
Archsy (www.archsydetroit.com ) to
give her organization with a touch
of whimsy. The company's co-owner
is her nephew, Elliott Disner, 22, an
architecture graduate of Lawrence
Technological University in Southfield.
Within two weeks, dark gray paint was
on walls and 2-foot by 8-foot pieces
of lumber had been fashioned into a
slatted counter enclosure and separate
desk. Forks, knives and spoons turn up
as decor features, even as tiny pulls on
the ladies' room bureau.
Some items from Annabel's way-
cool home have "come to live" at
ACCD, as she put it, including a robot
made of empty labeled cans.
Visitors are likely to be given a fresh
cone of cotton candy from Annabel's
own machine. She simply loves eating
cotton candy, a treat her artist mother
Bertha and cardiologist father Alberto
Cohen discouraged during her child-
hood. Annabel, a divorcee of Brazilian
Jewish ancestry, raised her now adult
daughter Raquel, 25. The other pride
of Annabel's life is Bradley Cooper, her
blue mini-Cooper automobile, which
has a fan club on Facebook.
"Everybody Eats" is the company
credo, and people certainly do like eat-
ing Annabel's food. In a morning run-
down recently, the orders seem end-
less. Annabel sits with ACCD Catering
Manager Robin Fenner to become
familiar with upcoming gatherings of
all sizes.
"A grand opening can be as many as
1,000 people Annabel said.
She confers with Fenner and
Delivery Coordinator Ashley Keehn
