Gershon Baskin: The Negotiator: Freeing
Gilad Schalit from Hamas
In June 2006, Hamas terrorists captured
an Israeli soldier named Gilad Schalit. The
abduction garnered headlines around the
world, and campaigns calling for Schalit's
release continued for five steady years. Why
was Schalit allowed to live, and why was he
finally freed?
Meet Gershon Baskin. An American-
Israeli peace activist, Baskin was determined
to liberate Schalit. He acted on his own ini-
tiative — working behind the scenes, engag-
ing in private meetings and sending secret
messages — helping to make it possible for
the IDF soldier to finally return home.
Tickets are $12.

Mitchell Bard: Death to the Infidels:
Discovering a Lost World in a 1938 Family
Film
In 1938, David Kurtz (the author's
grandfather) filmed three minutes of daily
life in Nasielsk, just outside Warsaw. Soon
afterward, the Nazis deported the city's
entire Jewish community, most of whom
were murdered. Three Minutes in Poland
is the extraordinary story of how a tiny bit
of a tourist's film became a memorial to
more than 2,000 Jews (there is a compelling
Detroit connection when some local families
discover their relatives in the clip; see next
week's Jewish News for the story).
Radical Islam's War Against the Jews
"The gun is our only response to [the]
Zionist regime says Ismail Haniyeh of
Hamas, who has become a leading spokes-
man in the Middle East conflict.
But does this organization really have
anything to do with the Palestinians? Not
according to Mitchell Bard. Executive direc-
tor of the American-Israeli Cooperative
Enterprise (AICE), Bard contends that
Hamas takes issue with the very presence of
Jews on "Islamic land" and offers a terrifying
prediction of how the organization will con-
tinue moving forward with its religious war,
offering little hope for peace.
Tickets are $12.

Peter Eisner: The Pope's Last Crusade:
How an American Jesuit Helped Pope Pius
XI's Campaign To Stop Hitler
Pope Pius XI, predecessor to Pope Pius XII
(who served during World War II), frequent-
ly spoke out against fascism and racism.
Pius XI was about to issue an extraordinary
statement — a complete rejection of Nazism
— before his death in 1939. The Pope's Last
Crusade is a true story of a daring move that
was ultimately thwarted by a group of clergy-
men.

Yochi Dreazen: The Invisible Front: Love
and Loss in an Era of Endless War
Maj. Gen. Mark Graham and his wife,
Carol, had two handsome, intelligent and
thoughtful sons.
One — Jeffrey — was killed while serv-
ing in Iraq. The second, Kevin, was a senior
ROTC cadet who told no one of his battles
with depression and eventually killed him-
self. "We have to live with knowing we did
not get our son the best medical care he
deserved — and we lost him," Maj. Gen.
Graham said.
Today, the Grahams are devoted to helping
prevent suicide in the military and working
to educate the public about mental health.
Tickets are $12.

SOUAD MEKHENNET
Pursuit of SS Doctor Aribert Heim
Dr. Aribert Heim was known as the
"Butcher of Mauthausen," a death camp
where he performed operations without
anesthesia and injected gasoline into prison-
ers' hearts.
After the war, Heim found work in Baden-
Baden — and then he vanished.
Aribert Heim's curious life continued in
Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Libya. His death
was reported numerous times — but con-
firming it is another story.
The Eternal Nazi tells the tale of an evil
man and the handful of figures determined
to track him down.

Brian Portnoy: The Investor's Paradox:
The Power of Simplicity in a World of
Overwhelming Choice
Invest, invest, invest — you hear it all the
time. But in a troubled economy and with so
many opportunities, where should a person
start?
Brian Portnoy explains investing in terms
easy enough for anyone to understand, yet
sophisticated enough that even the savviest
investor can learn a great deal. What are elite
hedge funds? Are there limits to mass-mar-
ket mutual funds? What is the dichotomy
between "traditional" and "alternative"
investments?
The Investor's Paradox provides practical
tools for investment success and empower-
ment to investors drowning in possibility.
