Gift Of Mattresses Helps
500 Local Flood Victims
For 500 local Jewish families affected
during the recent flood, there was
something good that came out of it.
Jackie and Larry Kraft of Serta
Restokraft heard about the families hit
by the disaster and stepped up to assist
the Detroit Chesed Project. They actu-
ally manufactured mattress sets just for
the local Jewish community! We were
so inspired by what Jackie and Larry
did, we started working on washers,
dryers, furnaces, couches, etc. The sup-
port we've received from individuals
and companies has been tremendous.
Due to financial limitations for many
of the families hit, most had little or
no insurance for sewer back up. They
had no money for fixing the basement
or even buying the basic necessities
like new mattresses. In fact, many
folks used the basements as a real part
of their homes. The homes are fairly
small, and the basements are a critical
part of the house. Mattresses were on
top of the list.
Shortly after the flood, Serta
Restokraft delivered trucks filled with
mattresses and box springs to be dis-
tributed to those in need. Many, with
tears in their eyes, were eternally grate-
ful for the staunch friends in the com-
munity who came to their rescue.
All of us at the Detroit Chesed
Project are tremendously appreciative
of the generosity of Jackie and Larry
Kraft. We can't thank them enough, and
our community is forever indebted to
them.
There is nothing more important
than a good friend and a peaceful
night's sleep, especially during a most
difficult time.

Helping Clean B'nai David
Cemetery 'A Real Mitzvah'
On Sunday, Sept. 14, cousin Corrine
Merna and I visited the B'nai David
cemetery for our annual cleaning of our
grandparents and great-grandparents
graves. We have been doing this since
we were children. We were delighted to
see the community effort, instigated by
David Goldman and his daughter Eva,
to clean up this neglected cemetery.
While doing our cleanup and plant-
ing, I noticed two young boys working
on a nearby grave. Apparently, they had
picked that grave at random to clean up.
It turns out that I knew the man who
was buried there. His name was Nathan
Ruzumna. He was my mother's cousin's
husband. He was a kind wonderful man
and father to three daughters. He was
shot and killed during a robbery of his
store in 1960 at age 59.
I was so happy to be able to share his
story with these two young boys, Leo
and Barry Sabin. Leo and Barry, you
did a real mitzvah and deserve to be
acknowledged for your selflessness.
We are so appreciative of David
and Eva Goldman and their efforts to
raise money for the continuing care
and maintenance of the B'nai David
cemetery. As we've done for so many
years in the past, and as our mothers
did, Corrine and I will continue this
mitzvah for our grandparents, Harry
and Sophie Radovsky, and our great-
grandparents, Gertrude and Baruch
Radovsky. They are gone but not forgot-
ten.

A World War III
With Terrorism?
On Sept. 10, President Barack Obama
outlined a strategy to defeat the Islamic
State, ISIL, which he said is "not
Islamic" and "not a state:'
ZOA National President Morton
Klein responded, "President Obama is
making the absurd, untenable claim
that all terrorism, carried out by
avowedly Muslim groups, acting explic-
itly in the name of their religion, and
citing Islamic scripture and sources, are
somehow not Muslim:'
ISIL, al Qaida, Hamas, Hezbollah
and all sorts of new terrorist groups
such as Khorasan, which is "developing
fresh plots to target U.S. aviation" (CBS
News, Sept. 18) are all simply following
the Quran's teachings: "Soon shall we
cast terror into the hearts of the unbe-
lievers"; (3:151). "The Jews ... and the
Christians ... may Allah destroy them";
(9:30) just to name two out of more
than 100 violent passages directed at
Islamic non-believers.
In the Quran, Muslims who do not
join the fight are called "hypocrites"
and warned that Allah will send them
to hell if they do not join the slaughter.
Obama said that "Islam has a proud
tradition of tolerance" (June 4, 2009, at
Cairo University) and Kerry said, "The
real face of Islam is a peaceful religion"
(Sept. 5, 2014).
Peace? Is that why Sheik Abu Bilal
Ismail called for Jews to be killed dur-
ing a speech at a Berlin mosque earlier
this summer? Is that why Palestinian
Authority TV featured poet Ahmad,
Ask Attorney
Ken Gross
about...
Your Legal
Issues
calling Jews "most evil among creations
... wretched pigs ... barbaric monkeys:'
Are we at war or not at war? It is
an absurd illusion to believe the U.S.
and a few allies can battle "and defeat"
one faction of Islamic terrorism and
feel safe. This World War III is with
all Islamic fundamentalists around the
world who believe they must "kill infi-
dels wherever they may be hiding!'

Gov. Snyder Should Not
Have Addressed ISNA
Let me get this straight. The JN edito-
rial ("Governor Stands With Israel At
Muslim Forum:' Sept. 11, page 46) is
complimenting and giving cover to Gov.
Rick Snyder for speaking at the Islamic
Society of North America convention?
ISNA is a Muslim Brotherhood-
affiliated organization that funneled
money to Hamas, and that Federal
Judge Solis refused to remove from the
list of unindicted co-conspirators in the
largest terrorist funding trial in the his-
tory of our country — the Holy Land
Foundation Trial — citing "ample" evi-
dence ISNA was involved.
There is a word in the English lan-
guage that should have been used by
Snyder from the start. That word is
"no." This was not a difficult situation
for Snyder as the JN purports. This was
a political move that seriously back-
fired and may end up costing him the
election along with detrimental effects
down the line for other candidates.
And, based on media reports, it was
a double whammy for Snyder as he did
not win any points with the ISNA devo-
tees attending the conference. Hatem
Bazian, chairman of American Muslims
for Palestine and a speaker at the event,
wrote on Aug. 30 regarding Snyder's
comments that, "Governor Rick has lost
our vote, and if he runs for president
then count on me to call and organize
Muslims across the country to oppose
his candidacy:'
And, it appears this entire "out-
reach" may have been a coordinated
effort with the chair of the Michigan
Republican Party, Bob Schostak, who
gave an interview just weeks before to
the Arab American News, owned by
Osama Siblani. Siblani has publicly sup-
ported Hamas and Hezbollah as "free-
dom fighters:'
As for Snyder's words of "support" for
Israel, how convenient to leave out the
word "Jewish" as he referred to the State
of Israel. At the heart of the issue is
Israel's right to exist as a "Jewish" state.
