Holocaust Educator

indy Mittleman Bruton, 66, of
Southfield, died Sept. 3, 2014.
Mrs. Bruton was a teacher from
1990 to 2007. She taught for three years
at Birmingham Seaholm High School
before moving to Birmingham Groves
High School to teach Holocaust literature.
She became an expert in teaching
Holocaust literature within the larger
community. She helped to plan and
present at the annual Holocaust and
Armenian Genocide Conference spon-
sored by Wayne State University and was
a member of the planning committee of
the Holocaust Teachers Workshop spon-
sored by Michigan State University.
She also attended the Belfer National
Conference for Educators in July of 1995
at the National Holocaust Museum in
Washington, D.C., which inspired her
CHARLES BENNETT, 77, of Oak Park,
died Sept. 6, 2014.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years,
Marcia Bennett; son, Moshe Yitchok
Bennett of Oak Park; daughters and son-
in-law, Denise Bennett, Shayna Hinda
and Pinchas "Peter" Bentley of Brooklyn,
N.Y.; sister, Phyllis Bennett of Delray
Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law and brother-in-
law, Shelley and Ed Kohl; many loving
grandchildren and great-grandchildren;
dear nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bennett was the dear brother of the
late Howard Bennett.

LOUISE BRESLER, 70,
of West Bloomfield,
died Sept. 4, 2014.
She is survived by
her sister, Lenore Freed;
brother and sister-in-
law, Phillip and Iris
Bresler; nieces and
nephews, Joni Lipson
and Bill Seikaly, Beverly Freed, Larry
and Laini Freed, Ben Bresler and Steven
Bresler; grandnephews, Zachary and Ross
Lipson, Joshua, Danny and Jake Freed,
and Javan and Shane Bresler.
Mrs. Bresler was the dear sister-in-law
of the late Jack Freed.
Interment was at Nusach Harie

Mrs. Bruton wrote of her experience
teaching students about the Holocaust:
"I am not an expert on the Holocaust.
What I do know is how to teach
this information to high school
students. I have been responsible
for helping students realize their
vulnerability as victims and also
how easy it would have been for
them to become bystanders or
even perpetrators. I have learned
to respect the students' rights
while at the same time being care- Lindy

victims:'
Mrs. Bruton was also an active mem-
ber of the multicultural committee at

PHILIP BUCKFIRE,
86, died Aug. 31, 2014,
in Santa Rosa, Calif.,
surrounded by his wife
of 60 years and his chil-
dren.
He was born Nov.
8, 1927, to Rose and
Buckfire
Isidore Buchfurer.
He was a resident of Detroit, West
Bloomfield and Scottsdale, Ariz. He was a
longtime member of Temple Beth El.
Mr. Buckfire received his B.A. in jour-
nalism from Wayne State University in
1949. He served in the U.S. Army as a
combat correspondent from 1950 to 1952.
In 1954, he married Sylvia Schlachter.
He started a successful advertising
agency, Buckfire & Co., which was for
decades instrumental in the success of
many Detroit-area companies and to the
election campaigns of many Michigan
politicians. His firm received many
industry awards, including the Clio.
After retiring in 1994, he devoted
himself to his many interests including
Courtwatchers, golf and travel.
Mr. Buckfire is survived by his wife,
Sylvia; his children, Carol and her hus-
band, Paul Benson, Kenneth and his wife,
Noreen Buckfire, Julie and her husband,
Michael Schloss; grandchildren, Zachary
and Samuel Lehrer, Annabel, William and
Alexander Buckfire, Rachel and Joshua
Simkovitz; many dear, devoted friends.
He was a cherished brother-in-law who is
survived by Marsha and Jerry Lynne and
their family.
He was the son-in-law of the late Helen
Fitlow; the brother of the late David
Buckfire.
Obituaries
Luther King Jr. assemblies. She started
a peer mediation class at Groves, which
taught students to help their peers medi-
ate conflicts. She was a beloved teacher
and later dean of students at Groves.
Students loved her and
knew that she was on their
side.
After leaving Groves
due to illness, Mrs. Bruton
continued her passion for
teaching others about the
Holocaust by being a docent
at the Holocaust museum.
Bruton
For more than 30 years,
she was a member of the
Rosedale Community Players, a local
community theater group. She served on
their board, performed in and directed
many plays, most recently Superior
Donuts, by Traci Lutz (May 2014)
She was an active member of the
Jewish Parents Institute from 1986-1995,
having held many board positions and
teaching several classes for children.
Mrs. Bruton is survived by her hus-
band, John Bruton; daughters and son-
in-law, Mara Bruton and Zach Taylor
of Santa Fe, N.M., and Ilana Bruton of
Chicago, Ill.; grandchildren, Bria Taylor
and Liza Taylor; sister and brother-in-
law, Fraudelle and David Glaser; brother,
Robert Mittleman.
She was the devoted daughter of the
late Morris and the late Betty Mittleman.
