Finally, the torch is lit. After months
of planning, organizing and volunteer-
ing, the 2014 JCC Maccabi Games &
ArtsFest kicked off with its opening
ceremonies at the Fox Theatre on
Sunday night.
The theater was filled with athletes,
volunteers, host families and VIPs as
everyone's anticipation for the Games
& ArtsFest finally came to fruition.
Athletes and artists from 29 delega-
tions from around the United States
and world — including Israel and
Canada — were celebrated at the cer-
emony.
Master of ceremonies Mike Stone
from 97.1-FM The Ticket, introduced
each delegation of athletes as they
walked across the Fox Theatre stage,
waving and giving high-fives to the
spectators. The crowd gave standing
ovations when the Israeli and Detroit
delegations were introduced.
"Tonight we come together to cel-
ebrate our young artists and athletes
who will embark on a journey to push
themselves as athletes and artists," JCC
Associate Executive Director David
Stone said.
Ariella Monson, Games & ArtsFest
director, was relieved and excited.
"It's really exciting and a proud
moment to be able to see everybody
and all the hard work come together,"
Monson said. "It's going to be great
showing everyone what Detroit has
to offer and having a great time, and
maybe being able to relax if I can and
enjoy what's coming"
Federation CEO Scott Kaufman
reminded the crowd that Israel must
not be forgotten during this time of
celebration.
"In a world that's gone absolutely
mad with anti-Semitism, with the
ridiculous double-standard that Israel
is being held to, I want to make one
thing absolutely perfectly clear: On
behalf of our community, our JCC, the
JCC Association and all our partners,
we stand with Israel:' Kaufman said.
"Our friends from Israel, it's impor-
tant that you know everyone in this
room stands with you, your people,
your country and we're you're family.
We're here for you 100 percent."
Following those words, Kaufman
initiated a moment of silence for the
soldiers in the IDF who have lost their
lives fighting in Gaza.
The theme throughout the Games &
ArtsFest this year is kindness.
