Monica Jakubiak and Ely Tama

Daughter And Dan
Run For First Plac.

Steve Stein

Contributing Writer

I

t was family day at the Farmington
Founders Festival 4 Mile Run.
More specifically, father and
daughter day.
Ely Tama, 67, and his daughter
Monica Jakubiak, 37, who live a
few houses away from each other
in Farmington Hills, each won their
age group championship in the July
19 race that began and ended in
Shiawassee Park.
Running together, they finished just
two seconds apart.
Jakubiak took first place in the
female ages 35-39 group in 33:03.
Tama took first place in the male ages
65-69 group in 33:05. They placed
78th and 79th overall.
While Jakubiak was 45 seconds
ahead of her nearest age group com-
petitor, Tama was more than four
minutes in front of the second-place
finisher in his age group.
"My goal wasn't to win my age
group:' Tama said. "I wanted to push
Monica so she finished in the top five
in her age group:'
Jakubiak said she wanted to place
in the top three in her age group. As
she was sprinting to the finish line, she
glanced at the race clock and saw she
had a shot to break 33 minutes. That
became a more immediate goal.
"I came close she said. "I didn't
know I had won my age group until
the results were posted. I was very
happy:'
It was a remarkable race for
Jakubiak, who gave birth to her daugh-
ter, Evelyn, 15 months ago.
The 4-mile run was a little out of
her competitive comfort zone, but she
wanted it to be that way.
"I'm a 5K (3.2-mile) race gal, but I
wanted to up the ante she said.
She plans on running in a 10K race for
the first time Sept 14 at the Run for the
Wild at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak.

Her father will be right there with
her again. He's completed 17 mara-
thons, including the Boston Marathon.
He hasn't run a marathon in about
20 years, but he runs and swims
regularly and rides his bicycle 75-100
miles each weekend, so he'll be ready
for the 10K.
"My father is my inspiration and my
motivation:' Jakubiak said.
Father and daughter run together
one morning each week. Last week,
they covered 6 miles.
"We get a chance to catch up with
each other during our runs," Jakubiak
said. "It's always a great way to start
the day."
Jakubiak likes running alone, too.
Besides being a wife and mother, she
works full-time in advertising.
"I don't have a lot of quiet time in
my life, so running gives me time to
unwind, and enjoy quiet and solitude
she said.
Not everything father and daughter
have done together involving sports
has been related to running.
Big Detroit Lions and NFL fans,
they attended every Super Bowl for
15 straight years (1994-2009), visit-
ing places like Atlanta, Miami, New
Orleans and San Diego.
"We always arrived there Thursday
and came back Monday:' Tama said.
"Besides the games, we got to enjoy
all the activities and parties that take
place before, during and afterwards:'
They ended the Super Bowl streak
when Jakubiak got married and start-
ed a family.
She and her husband, Jason, also
have a son, Charlie, 5.
Tama, a certified public accountant,
and his wife, Andrea, have been
married 40 years. They have another
daughter, Jessica Quinn, 35, who also
lives near them in Farmington Hills.
