Patients work with therapists to improve their strength — and their quality of life.

ometimes aging can be seen as a
period of inevitable decline. Most
national health statistics support
this rather dismal, negative viewpoint.
For example:
• By age 65, most adults have lost 33%
of the strength they had at age 30
• By age 74, 25% of men and 66% of
women cannot carry a 10-pound
shopping bag
• By age 60, most women have lost
more than 20% of their pre-meno-
pausal bone mass
• One in three adults older than 65 fall
each year
• Two in three "Baby Boomers" have
multiple chronic health conditions
that limit function and threaten their
independence
BUT ... It doesn't have to be this way.
ActiveRx, Active Aging Center in West
Bloomfield helps mature adults turn back
the clock and improve their health and
quality of life with physical therapy and
Strengtherapy" programs.
While a majority of patients are
referred to ActiveRx for physical therapy
(often covered by Medicare or private
insurance) after recovering from surgery,
a fall or accident, many seniors can also
benefit from the firm's wide-ranging
continuum of care.
"Traditionally, health providers are very
good at reacting to acute conditions with
physical therapy," says owner Mark Lines
of Wolverine Lake. "At ActiveRx, we are
more proactive. We know that improving
strength improves quality of life. We treat
more than just the condition that brought
our patients in for PT."
ActiveRx Strengtherapy" combines a
comprehensive wellness assessment with
a lifestyle-oriented physical strengthening
system. Patients can enroll in this elective
membership directly, or they often gradu-
ate into Strengtherapy following success-
ful completion of active physical therapy.
Patients in Strengtherapy" see drastic
increases in strength, balance, function
and independence. They also experience
increased independence, vitality, energy,
strength, flexibility, balance, mobility and
physical and cognitive functions, while
reducing their risk of falling, stress, fa-

tigue and physical pain. Patients have said
their quality of life greatly improves; they
sleep better and health problems such as
diabetes, high blood pressure and high-
cholesterol improve. Women see their
bone density rise, meaning a reduced risk
of a fracture from osteoporosis.
"For the first time in four years, I can
put my robe on, button it all the way
down the front and stand without touch-
ing anything. It may not sound like a big
deal to a lot of people, but it is to me,"
said one patient.
Unlike other physical therapy, health-
care clinics or health clubs, ActiveRx
initiates a patient's experience with the
ActivEval — a whole body physical func-
tion and strength assessment — "you
can't get to where you want to go until
we know where you are and what you
need," Lines says.
Physician-referred patients begin active
physical therapy at this point. However,
you don't have to wait for a problem to
arise before rebuilding your strength. The
ActiveRx Strengtherapy" membership is
a fun, socially active group. The program
is based on 10 years of research and is
specifically designed for mature adults.
As patients get fit, their physical function
and quality of life increases, they make
friends, share experiences and find new
hope to redefine aging.
It's affordable, too: $99 a month
for twice-weekly visits with a Strength
Therapist. "This is roughly $12.50 per
visit, which is less than most insurance
co-pays," says Lines. Within three to four
months most patients recover at least 10
years of their strength and their ability to
function. ❑
