Contributing Writer

ndrew Cahn had a solid
sophomore year for the
Western Michigan University
men's tennis team.
The former Michigan Mr. Tennis
from West Bloomfield High School
was 20-13 in doubles, the best record
on the team, including 4-0 in the Mid-
American Conference with two differ-
ent partners.
He was 18-19 in singles. Four matches
came at No. 2 singles, where he was 2-2.
His career collegiate records are now
24-29 in doubles and 46-37 in singles
for a combined 70-66. He was 28-18 in
singles as a freshman, leading the team
in wins, and he was named to the MAC
All-Tournament Team.
Equally as important, Cahn's cumula-
tive 3.64 grade point average earned the
pre-business major a spot on the 2014
Academic All-MAC Team.
How does Cahn, 19, find time to be a
success on the tennis courts and in the
classroom?
"Time management and common
sense he said. "You don't want to fall
behind in your classes:'
Cahn doesn't take his studies with
him when he hits the road with the ten-
nis team for away matches.
"I try to get everything done before
we leave he said. "It's important that I
focus on my matches when we're on the
road. I don't want anything distracting
me:"
Cahn said he hasn't decided what
type of business career he'd like to pur-
sue after he graduates from WMU. Will
tennis be involved?
"It's crossed my mind; he said. "I'd
be interested if the opportunity arises,
but, to be honest, that's not my first
choice"
There's some work to do on the ten-
nis courts before Cahn enters the busi-
ness world.
He said he wants to improve his
record in singles next year and help
WMU return to the top of the MAC.
Cahn said he prefers doubles to
singles, "but that's probably because I
did better this year in doubles. If I did
better in singles, I'd probably like that
better:'

He was elected a team captain by his
teammates at the end of the fall season
"because he's a low-ego guy who is a
true team player; said WMU Coach
Dave Morin. "He's a great extension of
the coaching staff'

Softball for Charity

The InterCongregational Men's Club
Softball League took a time out from
its regular-season schedule to help a
charity.
Instead of playing league games on
the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend,
about 50 players donated a minimum
$5 to West Bloomfield Relay for Life to
play exhibition games and raised $290.
Four teams were put together
by "mixing and matching" players,
according to Steve Achtman of Temple
Israel, one of the league coordinators.
A total of three games were
played on a perfect spring morning
at Community Sports Park in West
Bloomfield, the league's weekly home.
The winners of the first two games
played again, while the losers were
done for the day.
"Besides holding the games for char-
ity, it provided a chance for guys from
different teams to get to know each
other; Achtman said.
This was the second year the
league held the charity day for West
Bloomfield Relay for Life. A similar
amount was raised last year.
Achtman said the league is all about
camaraderie and fellowship, and the
charity day is another example.
"We have 12 teams in our league.
That means 130, 140 guys from all over
the area get together every Sunday to
play softball; Achtman said.
"On a day they when didn't have to
play, on a holiday weekend, about 50
played anyway for a good cause. I think
that's pretty cool:'
The other league coordinators are
Chuck Freedman from Temple Kol
Ami and Michael Betman from Adat
Shalom Synagogue.

Relay for Life is an American Cancer
Society event to be held June 7 and 8 at
West Bloomfield High School.
