embers of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield are used to see-
ing Assistant Cantor Leonard Gutman
in the sanctuary leading prayer ser-
vices, reading Torah and attending
to lifecycle events. But, they may not
know their cantor can also be seen
slamming sledgehammers, swinging
kettle bells and lifting some serious
weights.
Gutman, 62, of Southfield was a reg-
ular at Pulse Fitness in Royal Oak until
November 2013 when he was sidelined
due to foot surgery and several hospi-
tal visits. He's finally recovered enough
to resume the intense workouts that
helped him shed 20 pounds.
"I lost weight. I was developing
more muscle. I changed my eating
habits:' Gutman said (noting that his
wife Sandra's excellent cooking added
to the challenge).
The personal trainer who guided
Gutman and pushed him to his
limits is Scott Genord, owner of
Pulse Fitness and a former profes-
sional football player with the Detroit
Lions and NFL Europe (2004-2007).
Gutman, a husband, father and
grandfather, met Scott in 2011 after
receiving free personal training ses-
sions as a Father's Day gift.
"I started out from nothing," the
cantor recalls. "The workouts were
tough and I just did them. It made me
feel better:'
During one workout, Gutman com-
pleted 15 pushups, 25 sit-ups and 15
kettle bell swings, then he pushed
a weighted sled across a parking lot
four times, jumped rope 100 times,
pounded on a tire with a sledgeham-
mer 20 times and burned 25 calories
on a rowing machine. He repeated
everything three times.

Fear Factor
Genord says the biggest hurdle for
many people in the gym is the fear of
getting started. He tells clients to "be
stronger than their excuses" and he tells
them right off the bat, it won't be easy.
"Of course it's hard. If it wasn't hard
everyone would do it," he says. "Many
people are scared of being challenged
or being pushed outside their comfort
zone:'
Genord designed his gym on North
Main Street to keep people engaged by
giving them options. Clients can choose
between personal training, group
training and a variety of classes for all
skill levels from "booty boot camp" to
yoga. (It's $8 for the first class, $15 after
that. "Class pass" packages are also
available) The gym also offers cardio
machines and nutrition counseling.
"I think the biggest thing is the 'why,"'
Genord says. "To find success in any-
thing you have to ask yourself why you
do it. You want to get healthy? Live lon-
ger? You want to feel better? Have more
energy? You find your 'why' and that's
what motivates you to do it:'
Genord has trained clients up to 92
years old. He says people can improve
their strength, range of motion, balance
and flexibility at any age. Gutman admits
he regained much of the weight he lost
while recovering from surgery but says
he can't wait to get back into shape.
"You look forward to going to the
gym and sweating," he said. "Life can
be stressful. This just takes the edge
off:' ❑
