Day Of Service

J-Serve teens help

Detroit PAL prepare for spring sports program.

n Sunday, March 30, more
than 250 Jewish students
in grades 6-12, along with
Jewish educators, rabbis, young
adults and parent chaperones, helped
Detroit's Police Athletic League (PAL)
get ready for its spring sports program.
J-Serve Detroit was proud to bring
everyone together for a day of service
coinciding with 10,000 Jewish teens
from across North America, Europe
and Israel participating in J-Serve
2014, the International Day of Jewish
Youth Service.
Following an opening program
at Temple Beth El in Bloomfield
Township, we left for five different
Detroit PAL sites. Volunteers spent the
afternoon painting park benches, sort-
ing sports donations, cleaning up and
setting up sports fields.
The day of service concluded with a
pep rally led by the director of Detroit
PAL, Rabbi Michael Moskowitz from
Temple Shir Shalom, and students who
participate in Detroit PAts cheerlead-
ing program.
"J-Serve was fun and a great expe-
rience:' said Seth Betman of West

Bloomfield, a 10th-grader and mem-
ber of Adat Shalom Synagogue and
AZA . "While we were working on
fixing up a park in a neighborhood,
people stopped by and thanked us for
what we were doing for their commu-
nity. This is when we knew what we
were doing truly made an impact:' ❑

When I think of Israel I think of when I went on the Teen Mission with
Temple Shir Shalom. I remember it like it was yesterday. Walking the same
streets as my ancestors, learning about the deep, meaningful history, beautiful
rituals and spiritual connection. That was an emotional and moving experi-
ence; nothing that can ever be replaced. A piece of my heart will always be in
the east and I'm hopeful one day that we will have peace in Israel.
