A

held

commemoration was
in the historic Galeria on
the campus of Orchard
Lakes Schools on Jan. 27 to mark
International Holocaust Remembrance
Day and the 69th anniversary of the
liberation of the Nazi's infamous
Auschwitz concentration camp.
A brief, but moving service was
held. Monsignor Thomas Machalski,
chancellor of Orchard Lake Schools,
welcomed everyone, and Marcin
Chumiecki, director of the Polish
Mission, provided introductory
remarks. His focus was simple: "We
must remember such atrocities so that
they never happen again to Jews, Poles
or anyone else:'
The formal ceremony combined
Jewish and Catholic prayers in Polish,
English and Hebrew. Rabbi Aaron
Bergman from Adat Shalom Synagogue
in Farmington Hills sounded the sho-
far to close the formal ceremony.
Also at the event were the vice
consul of Poland, the consul gen-
eral of Canada; Dr. Rene Lichtman,
a Holocaust survivor; Jackie Beach,
mayor of Orchard Lake Village;
and Stephen Goldman, director of
the Holocaust Memorial Center in
Farmington.

On the dais were 11 candles rep-
resenting the approximately 11 mil-
lion lives lost during the Holocaust,
and a series of flags representing the
nations for which their diplomats sent
letters of greeting and respect. Their
letters were on display along with
the "Forbidden Art" exhibit, a travel-
ing exhibit from Auschwitz-Birkenau
Museums that shows images of art
created and hidden away by inmates at
Auschwitz.
The event coincided with a com-
memoration on the same day at the
Auschwitz-Birkenau Museums in
Poland. A presentation of images of
unknown victims of Auschwitz that
debuted at that ceremony was also
shown at the Galeria.
The event was organized by
Chumiecki, AJC Regional Director Kari
Alterman, Mike Smith of Wayne State
University, Dr. Piotr M.A. Cywinski,
director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau
State Museum, and JJ Przewozniak from
the Polish Mission.
The Polish Mission at Orchard Lake,
in partnership with the Auschwitz-
Birkenau State Museum in Poland, the
American Jewish Committee-Detroit,
Renaissance Media and the Detroit
Jewish News sponsored the event.
