In Memory Of

S ONIA KUDEWITZ

who was taken from us at the remarkable age of ioo.

THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, ADMINISTRATION, AND STAFF OF

THE JEWISH HOSPICE & CHAPLAINCY NETWORK

OFFERS HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO ELEANOR AND LARRY JACKIER,

AND TO SONIA'S EXTENDED FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

Sonia barely escaped the Nazi invasion of Baranovich, Poland on June 25, 1941.
Separated from her husband, Sam, who stayed behind to fight the fires, and with her two
young children in her arms, Sonia fled on foot. She then joined a convoy of refugees
headed to Minsk. The next day, upon seeing his father in a separate truck along the road,
Sonia's son ran to Sam moments before Nazi planes strafed the roadway with gunfire. The
trucks sped off in different directions and Sonia was again separated from her husband —
and her son. For the remainder of the war Sonia lived in a workers' barracks, her daughter
Eleanor in a nearby orphanage. After the war, Sonia and Eleanor miraculously reunited
with Sam. But the rest of the family — Sonia's mother, siblings, in-laws, nieces and
nephews, and her son — had all been killed.

Sonia, Sam and Eleanor eventually made their way to Detroit and rebuilt their lives. Sonia
was a Shoah survivor, a centenarian, and an inspiration as a mother, grandmother, and
great-grandmother. Her resilience and perseverance helped turn unspeakable misery into
a fulfilling and successful life for her family here in Michigan.

We have been honored to serve Sonia and her family at the end of her remarkable

journey.

WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER SONIA.

MAY HER MEMORY BE A BLESSING.
