Maccabiah Medals

I

Steve Stein
Contributing Writer

ne silver medal. Three bronze
medals.
Nicole Meisner of Huntington
Woods returned home from the 19th
Maccabiah Games in Israel with those
symbols of her success on the track and
memories that will last a lifetime.
Her silver medal
came in the 4x100-
meter relay. The bronze
medals were earned in
the 100, 200 and 4x400
relay.
Not bad for a sprinter
who is still not run-
Nicole Meisner ning at 100 percent
after recovering from a
pinched nerve in her back suffered earlier
this year.
The 20-year-old Berkley High School
graduate ran in the open adult division
in Israel for the United States, which was
represented by more than 900 athletes in
what's called the third-largest sports event
in the world.
Meisner's first request after her return
flight landed here was an immediate trip
to Lafayette Coney Island in Downtown

Detroit.
She had a Coney and an order of chili
cheese fries.
"Our family goes to Lafayette a lot. I
missed it," she said. "I told my friends in
Israel that would be the first place I'd want
to go when I got back home:'
This was Meisner's second trip to the
Maccabiah Games. She ran in the junior
division four years ago when she was 16
and won a silver medal in the 4x100 relay
and bronze medal in the 200.
She said because she's older and knew
what to expect, she had more fun this
time.
A senior at the University of Detroit
Mercy, Meisner is one of the top sprinters
on the women's track and field team. She
has a 3.5 grade point average and hopes
someday to be a criminal profiler for the
FBI.

Golfers Off To A Good Start
It wasn't a hole-in-one, but it wasn't a
bogey, either.
The inaugural B'nai B'rith golf league
wrapped up this month with Al DiPaolo
and Harold Silk winning the team cham-
pionship and Marc Ruskin capturing
the individual title at Fox Hills Golf and
Banquet Center in Plymouth.

Al DiPaolo and Harold Silk are the champion team of the B'nai B'rith golf league.

A dozen golfers — six teams — partici-
pated.
Teams and individuals battled head-
to-head in nine-hole rounds weekly for
15 weeks starting in mid-May. Handicaps
were used.
League organizer Gary Klinger said
while everyone was happy with the hospi-
tality at Fox Hills, the league probably will
move next year to a course that's closer to
the Jewish community.
"They have three nine-hole courses
at Fox Hills and we got to play them all,
which was great:' Klinger said. "But it
sometimes was difficult getting there (for
Thursday afternoon tee times) during
rush hour:'

Making A Racquet
Andrew Cahn isn't showing signs of a
sophomore jinx.
The Western Michigan University men's
tennis standout from West Bloomfield
won both his matches Sept. 15 at the Jack
Vredevelt Invite in Kalamazoo.
He beat Xavier's Matt Bishop 6-0, 6-1 in
singles and combined with Zach Phillips
to beat Freddy Abunku and Brian Carman
of Xavier 8-4 in doubles.
Cahn won a team-high 28 singles
matches as a freshman (28-18) last season
and was named to the All-Mid-American
Conference team. n
