l

he concept of CampDoc.com
began 10 years ago in the
Tamarack Camps' medical
clinic in Ortonville. Michael Ambrose
— now Dr. Michael Ambrose — has
worked in the Tamarack clinic ever
since he graduated high school. He
has seen the massive amounts of
medical information camps have to
capture.
Spurred by all this information he'd
see summer after summer, Ambrose
came up with the idea for CampDoc.
corn, the leading electronic health
record system for camps. Throughout
the years, CampDoc.com has expand-
ed to camps throughout the United
States, Canada and Israel.
CampDoc keeps track of both
camper and staff health information
in a secure location, yet camp doc-
tors and nurses have instant access to
important health information, includ-
ing general health history, allergies
and immunization data.
"Most camps now have more
than 50 percent of campers who
are on some sort of medication,"
said Ambrose of West Bloomfield,
a pediatrician who earned his M.D.
from University of Michigan Medical

School. "When camps are responsible
for handling medicine, there is a lot
of error. Kids get wrong medications
or the handwriting is difficult to read.
Doing things electronically helps
eliminate those errors?'
Camps are required to record all
illness and injury, from something
as simple as sunburns or bee stings
to something more serious, such as
an asthma attack or broken leg. Prior
to CampDoc, all of this was done by
hand. When parents dropped off their
child's luggage, they also dropped off
a bag with all their medication and a
note that said when to take it. Clinic
staff would then write out a medica-
tion sheet for each camper who was
on medicine.
"We had about 48 hours to write out
every camper's medicine?' said Julie
Nitzkin, Tamarack nurse. "It had to be
done quickly and correctly?'
A luxury of CampDoc is its ability to
print a medication sheet for each child
listing every medication they take and
when to take it. This is helpful when
campers leave the main camp for over-
nights or special trips. This is the most
stressful time for clinic staff because
campers won't be near the clinic and
can't just run in for medicine. Each
child's list and bag of medication must
be 100 percent accurate.

"Because of CampDoc.com , there
are no complaints about not being
able to read the medication sheets,"
Nitzkin of Farmington Hills said.
"CampDoc.com makes it very easy
for us and is efficient in getting those
medications together. It makes us,
as healthcare providers, very calm
and we know we have everything for
each camper. There is no confusion.
CampDoc.com has made our jobs less
stressful and simple."
Another plus is that CampDoc can
be accessed anytime, anywhere. If
there is an emergency at the soccer
field and counselors needed to find
out their camper's medical informa-
tion, they can consult an iPad and pull
up medical information on the spot.
"CampDoc is more successful and
beneficial in the way that it allows
the tedious process of accurately
documenting each camper's medical
history and information go quicker?'
said Tamarack clinic volunteer Sarah
Kolchinsky of Farmington Hills.
"There is always work to be done in
the clinic and CampDoc allows more
time to be allocated to other, and at
times more important, duties?'

Health Info Is Secure
CampDoc is extremely safe. Only the
camp's medical staff and camp direc-
tors have access to the health informa-
tion listed on the website. CampDoc
uses Secure Socket Layer (SSL), which
secures online data transmission.
"We take this very seriously because
we know we are dealing with a child's
security," Ambrose said.
"The information on CampDoc
is backed up on multiple servers
throughout the day. The data sits in
multiple locations so if one computer
goes down, it is accessible on another
server?'
Ambrose signed a lease in May in
Ann Arbor for CampDoc's first office.
The team consists of three web devel-
opers who are constantly working on
the product, making improvements
and adding new features daily.
"We need a central location for all
of us to discuss new ideas and fea-
tures," Ambrose said. "An office will
give everyone more of a collaborative
atmosphere."
Last summer, slightly more than
50,000 campers and staff were enlist-
ed on CampDoc.com. This summer,
that number will double. A CampDoc
app is in the works; the team is shoot-
ing for summer 2014 or the following
year. Within the next couple months,
Ambrose plans to branch out into
other industries such as schools,
sports teams and daycare.
