or the first time in almost 15
years, Detroit NCSY won the
prestigious Central East NCSY
Chapter of the Year Award. The chap-
ter received its trophy over Memorial
Day weekend at the regional conven-
tion in Ann Arbor.
NCSY (National Conference of
Synagogue Youth) is a worldwide
Orthodox outreach youth organiza-
tion that provides Jewish teens with
the opportunity to build strong con-
nections to their Jewish roots through
inspiration and leadership skills with
branches in more than 250 cities in
North America. No membership is
required; NCSY is an open youth
group where students can come and go
to events as they please.
Detroit's NCSY chapter board orga-
nized a plethora of new programs this
year and worked to transform and
reinvent old programs to make them
stronger.
"It was a tough and busy year,
but we accomplished a lot," Chapter
Director Rabbi Dovid Lichtig of Oak
Park said. "The year was full of new
and exciting developments, and we
really worked hard to have a fantastic
year. We were recognized for this and
it was a great feeling:'
For the first time, the chapter put
on a JUMP (Jewish Unity Mentoring
Program) team of 10 students based
out of the Frankel Jewish Academy
(FJA), Lichtig said. JUMP is an
umbrella program of NCSY.
The team cooked a fantastic
Chanukah dinner at the Ronald
McDonald House in Downtown
Detroit. After dinner, the team held an
Israel advocacy event.
"The team is already planning on
how to improve and grow for next
year:' Lichtig said.
The board worked to improve its
Detroit Jewish Scholars Program.
Every week, Detroit NCSY teens pair
up with adults at the Aish Center in
Huntington Woods and learn from
each other and from guest speakers.
There was a new location, new guest
speakers and a new rewards system,
including cash or tickets to a Tigers
game.

Elie Lipnik, 2012-13 president for the

Detroit chapter of NCSY, holds aloft
the Chapter of the Year trophy with
fellow Detroit participants.

Where Detroit's board really shined
was at the Fall Shabbaton held in the
Motor City. A Shabbaton is a weekend
away from home where teens spend
Shabbat together, sing, learn, listen
to speakers, meet new people and
participate in fun activities such as
bowling or roller blading. It was the
Detroit chapter board's most popu-
lar Shabbaton to date, with 89 teens
attending.
"We really have strived to become
the best chapter; said Raffi Levi of
Southfield, an FJA junior and regional
board treasurer. "We have initiated
new and creative events, recruited 89
students and took action in all the
ways we could to make the chapter
better. We are really proud to say we
have over 100 kids involved in our
chapter."
Also at the convention, for the first
time in years, a native Detroiter was
elected as regional president. FJA
senior Ami Nadiv's term for presiden-
cy begins immediately. He has been in
constant contact with the 2013-2014
regional board and has been brain-
storming new, innovative and engag-
ing activities for the region.
"My goal for next year is to improve
the region both quantitatively and
qualitatively:' Nadiv of Farmington
Hills said. "NCSY provides a space for
diverse Jewish teens to come together;
both kids with very limited Jewish
experiences and kids who come from
strong Jewish day school backgrounds
like Akiva and FJA. My goal is to
bridge the gap between these groups,
to foster an atmosphere that is engag-
ing and welcoming to everyone:'
