built much of the playground, and Jim
Allcom is facilities director at the JCC in
West Bloomfield; both worked patiently
with children and gave plenty of words
of encouragement.
Levi Serebryanski and his daughter,
Shira, 12, a student at Yeshivas Darchei
Torah, were working atop a slide, and Ira
Winer came with his son, Joey, 9, who
attends Akiva Hebrew Day School. It was
an easy choice to attend, said Ira, who
also has children ages 4 and 2: "We're
going to be using this park, too"
As men, women and children of all
ages arrived, they were assigned jobs
and given bottles of water and snacks.
Miriam Buckwold, whose husband
teaches at Yeshiva Beth Yehudah, came
early and was eager to get to work,
orange-and-white gloves already snug on
her hands.
"I'm here to help!" she called out to
JCC staff. Then she looked around, the
play area filled with volunteers, and
added: "It's such a beautiful thing to be
part of a community."

Work on the new Community Recreation
Park will continue with the creation of the
park's community gardens on Tuesday, June
18, and Wednesday, June 19. To volunteer,
call Amy Fertell, (248) 967-4030. Elizabeth
Applebaum is marketing director at the
Jewish Community Center.

the new Community Recreation Park.

for some tools. (Paul and Spencer also
were helping build, while Alana was bab-

Hazel Park resident Josie Hickner-

Katie Hickner-Rivard, who works in
the Center's membership and Lenny

khaki pants, a snappy pink streak in her
hair, Katie was affixing seats on one of
the play structures.
"I built a car before [at the Henry
Ford Museum], but never anything this
advanced," she said.
Ilan Runinkevich, 8, of Oak Park was
helping Josie. He has a bit of experience,
too, having built "stuff with my dad, like
birdhouses" His brother Tamir, 7, was
munching on pretzels and described his
day's activities as "building and playing"
Most of those in attendance were nov-
