Y
ana Vortsman does not hold a
degree in building recreation
parks, but she is precisely the
person you want there if ever you decide
to create one.
"It's easy:' she said, standing by a
collection of giant, colorful forms and
shapes in the process of becoming the
Oak Park Jewish Community Center's
new Community Recreation Park "You
get the tools, you get a map, you get the
instructions and you just follow them:'
Vorstman was one of dozens of volun-
teers who came May 26 to help put fin-
ishing touches on the JCC's new multi-
generational play area, which includes
swings and slides, exercise areas, a walk-
ing track, gardens and play spaces for all
ages and abilities.
The majority of the playground was
constructed by professionals, but volun-
teers worked from early in the morning
until almost dark affixing seats, tighten-
ing screws and attaching bits of this and
that.
Created thanks to a grant from the
Jewish Fund, generous donors to the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit and support from a recent JCC
fundraiser honoring Donna and Allan
Pearlman, the Community Recreation
Park is set to open Monday, June 24, also
the first day of the Oak Park JCC's Camp
Discovery
"I was so thankful that we had a
beautiful day, wonderful volunteers and
we were able to move forward with this
project to make our dream a reality:' said
JCC Assistant Executive Director Leslee
Magidson.

Like Yana Vortsman, Faye and Paul Blatt
of Oak Park came to help build the new
play area, as did their children, Spencer,
11, and Alana, 8. They are JCC members
and active in every aspect of life at the
Center. Their children attend Camp
Discovery; the Blatts serve on various
JCC committees; the children learned to
swim at the JCC; and Paul and Faye love
to exercise there. Even the family's dog
got into the action, stopping by last sum-
Bruce Klein, Huntington
Woods; Marc and Judy
Front, Oak Park; and Debbie
