Gimme Moe!

Moe's On Ten restaurant celebrates 30 years of success in Novi.

S

ure, he's smiling ... His Novi
restaurant has 30 years of open-
ing its doors to waiting people ...
And his dining spot in Wixom is on the
verge of a huge comeback.
Employees at Leon's, his Wixom eatery,
look at the site of the torn-down Ford
plant across the street that may possibly
give rise to a shopping center in the future.
In Novi, his popular Moe's On Ten
Family Dining, 10 Mile just west of
Haggerty, continues to satisfy custom-
ers with its clean, wholesome food that
has seen diners return time and again for
three decades.
It is many years since Moe Leon came
to this country from Syria ... After six
months as a busboy, waiter and cook,
he became the manager at a Novi chain
restaurant operation ... Moe had always
dreamed of having his own restaurant and
worked hard realizing that if he could do
it for another, why not
for himself?
In 1983, after years
of saving and careful
spending, he rented a
freestanding building
that housed a Greek
eatery and opened
a restaurant called
Leon's Family Dining
... Moe bought the
building 10 years later Moe Leon
and, in 2003, changed
the name to Moe's On
Ten Family Dining.
It was a sparse commercial area ... defi-
nitely not like today with all the car deal-
ers and varied operations ... The closest
restaurant was Silverman's, owned by Bob
Silverman, about a mile away ... Today,
there are many restaurants in the sector.
But Leon's and then Moe's On Ten made
their own big marks as well-operated,
clean and highly successful restaurants,
where Moe made all the soups, including

a chicken soup that has never
left a menu that features four
soups daily ... and his own
special kind of rolls that are
still a favorite munchie.
Thirty years of a successful
restaurant, same owner, just
a name change 10 years ago,
is a goodly number ... And
in those 30 years, his staff has
greeted almost 5 million peo-
ple dining on about 2 million
pounds of fish, more than a
million pounds of meat, almost
a million pounds of chicken, in excess of 8
million gallons of soup, etc.
Present menu best sellers include Lake
Superior whitefish, chicken breast sauteed
in butter sauce, Lake Erie perch sauteed
with herb butter and sliced almonds, and
Moe's Salad of mixed greens, tomatoes,
cucumbers, bleu cheese, walnuts and dried
cranberries ... Other best
sellers are lemon chicken
breast topped with
asparagus, mushrooms
and artichokes, and Wild
Mushroom Chicken
Alfredo sauteed with
asparagus, tomatoes and
parmesan cream sauce
over bowtie pasta.
Setting Moe's On Ten
apart from numerous
other surrounding res-
taurants is that almost
everything is fresh, including special
menu items that are changed daily ... and
dishes not on the menu like halibut, surf
and turf, stuffed shrimp, lemon sole, crab
cakes, lobster tails, King Crab Legs, etc.
Moe's On Ten seats 128 at the dining
room tables and padded booths, with 11
stools at the bar ... It is open seven days
weekly, Monday-Thursday, 7 a.m.-9 p.m.;
Friday & Saturday, 7 a.m.-10 p.m.; Sunday,
8 a.m.-9 p.m.

Being a wanted neighbor-
hood restaurant is in itself
an important feature ... and
serves a major purpose for
those in that area ... But a
noteworthy point is that many
persons will drive miles to
enjoy the cleanliness and
wholesome qualities of a
restaurant ... Moe's On Ten
can rightfully pride itself on
presenting these traits for an
appreciated 30-year existence.

READER MINI REVIEW

... From Dennis Silber ... "Chinese restau-
rants in Florida are as plentiful as delis.
One of our favorites here is the Panda
Gourmet on Jog and Lake Ida Roads in
Delray that we went to with visiting cous-
ins, Estelle Gubow and her late husband
Federal Judge Lawrence Gubow's daugh-
ter, Mona.
"The menu is simple but very tasty.
Mona and Estelle had moo goo pai pan
and sesame chicken. Debbie and I had egg
foo young, my favorite there with a gravy
so rich and tasty, and sweet and sour
shrimp. Others at the table had General
Tso chicken and chow fun noodles. Family
style is easy at Panda Gourmet, and we
often mix in its wonderful eggplant with
garlic sauce.
"Panda Gourmet may be short on ambi-
ence, but reasonably priced good food is
never disappointing."
HONOREE JOE TORRE won't have
Buddy's Pizza owner Robert Jacobs and his
vice president of operations, Wes Pikula,
to beat at this year's Hank Greenberg
Memorial Golf Invitational ... Monday,
June 3, Franklin Hills Country Club, West
Bloomfield.
It breaks Robert and Wes' string of
nine years (2004-2012) playing with each
year's recipient of the Hank Greenberg
Humanitarian Award ... According to Wes,
the best golfers of the Baseball Hall of Fame

greats he and Robert played with were Al
Kaline, Johnny Bench and Ozzie Smith.

quet attendance, contact Michigan Jewish

IF SHE HAD anything to say about
it ... and she did ... Weight Watcher
princess Florine Mark no doubt saw to
it that folks will eat sumptuously and
feel like a feather ... She and Epicurean
Group's Frank Turner made up the
healthy menu for the dinner session of
the Jewish Community Center's Maccabi
Gala and Reunion .... "Celebrating 30
years of Champions" ... Tuesday, May 28,
6 p.m. ... at the Berman Center for the
Performing Arts, West Bloomfield JCC
Florine is honorary chairgal with Joel
Jacob, honorary co-chair.
OLDIE BUT GOODIE DEPT. ... A tal-
ent scout is walking down the street and
came across a man and his dog. The little
dog is singing.
"Come to my office the scout said. "I
want to sign you and this marvelous dog to
a contract. This dog can make us both rich."
The man brings his little dog to the tal-
ent scout's office and the poodle is about
to finish singing "La Donna E' Mobile"
when a large dog runs into the room,
grabs him by the scuff of the neck and
runs away with him in her mouth. The
talent scout yells, "Stop her. She's taking
away our fortune!"
The man replies, sadly, "It's no use.
That's his mother. She doesn't want him
to be an entertainer. She wants him to be
a doctor."
CONGRATS ... To Morris "Morrie"
Schwartz on his 76th birthday ... To
Jeffrey Young on his 71st birthday ... To
Jerry Chudler on his 72nd birthday ... To
Emma Kellman on her 15th birthday.
