'A Man
Of Honor'
j
ay Hartman, born March
17, 1917, was the eldest
son of Joseph and Molly
Hartman. He passed away April 23,
2013, at age 96.
A talented athlete in his youth,
he was a star football player in
high school. As an adult, he turned
that athletic
prowess to golf,
earning count-
less champion-
ship trophies at
Franklin Hills
Country Club
in Farmington
Hills, even well
into his 80s.
Jay was a devoted son, brother
and friend; and those close to him
knew they could always turn to
him for advice and support. He
was, first and foremost, a man of
honor and integrity.
After studying business at Wayne
University, Jay served in the Army
during World War II, participating in
some of the worst battles of the war,
including the Battle of the Bulge.
Upon returning home to Detroit,
he joined his father in the family's
clothing business, eventually taking
the helm following his father's retire-
ment. He worked at the business
until his own retirement at age 80.
Although he never had children
of his own, Jay was the revered
uncle of eight nieces and nephews.
As one of his nephews remarked
upon his death, "No one ever had a
bad word to say about Jay" A com-
plex man, he was both "man about
town" and favorite of the ladies, as
well as a man of the old school —
commitment to family was second
nature to him.
Jay Hartman was pre-deceased
by his younger brother, Richard
Hartman, and his youngest sister,
Jane Blumberg; and brothers-
in-law, Dr. Joseph Gruber and
Herbert Blumberg.
He will be deeply missed by
his beloved sister, Shirley Gruber;
sister-in-law, Nancy Hartman;
his loving companion of 13
years, Natalie Kramer; nieces and
nephews, Fred (Linda) Gruber,
David (Yuri) Gruber, Patricia
Blumberg, Penny (Tom) Wolf,
Gary Blumberg, Marcie (Richard)
Maxfield, Michael Hartman and
Jeffrey Hartman; and many great-
nieces and great-nephews.
Interment was at Clover Hill
Park Cemetery. Arrangements by
Ira Kaufman Chapel. ❑
