FJA To Celebrate
13th Anniversary

The Jean & Samuel Frankel Jewish
Academy in West Bloomfield will be
celebrating its bar/bat mitzvah (13th)
anniversary with a celebration at 7 p.m.
Tuesday, April 30, at the Berman Center
for the Performing Arts at the Jewish
Community Center in West Bloomfield.
The school, housed in the JCC,
opened its doors to 51 underclassmen
on Aug. 28, 2000, as the Jewish Academy
of Metropolitan Detroit.
The summer between its second and
third years, the school received an anony-
mous gift of $20 million to be given over
time. The gift, eventually revealed to be
from Jean and Samuel Frankel, was the
largest such donation to a Jewish high
school in the U.S. In 2006, as construction
began on a permanent home, the school
was renamed for the Frankels.
Now, FJA has more than 400 alumni
and a current student body of 230, with
more than 70 full- and part-time faculty,
staff and administrators. The Jewish col-
lege preparatory school describes itself
as North America's only "open, halachic,
Zionist, American school."
Zvi Gitelman, professor of political
science and Preston R. Tisch Professor
of Judaic Studies at the University of
Michigan, will speak about the Frankels'
contribution to Jewish education.
Patron-level contributors begin at
$1,800 and include a strolling dinner at 6
p.m. Tickets for the program and dessert
afterglow begin at $36. For information,
contact Tim Burke at (248) 592-5263, ext.
235 or tburke@frankelja.org.

Teens Can Join J-Serve
To Serve Community

More than 200 Jewish teens in Metro
Detroit will join with 10,000 Jewish
teens from across North America,
Europe and Israel to participate in
J-Serve, an International Day of Jewish
Youth Service on April 21.
J-Serve Detroit is one of more than
100 international programs where teens
in grades 6-12 will work together as they
explore the Jewish values of gemilut cha-
sidim, acts of lovingkindness; tzedakah,
just and charitable giving; and tikkun
olam, repairing the world.
The teens will begin their day with a
peer-led discussion of Jewish values and
conclude with a discussion on how their
day of service relates to their Judaism.
From painting a children's play area
at Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries to
gardening and working on beautifica-
tion projects at more than six sites in
Detroit and Pontiac, the teens will join
together to put good deeds into action.
To participate, go to jservedetroit.
