about serving in the army. This
complex relationship is founded on
events that took place even before
the Jewish state was established.
Most of the founding fathers of
the Jewish state saw Zionism as a
movement exclusively separate from
religion. Their plan was to diminish
the "primitive" religious beliefs and
customs of Jewish Ohm (many from
Arabic countries) who arrived in
Israel after the creation of the state.
Religious immigrant children were
often forced to cut off their payot
(side locks), violate Shabbat, eat
non-kosher food and were placed
in strictly secular schools, which
taught that belief in God and obser-
vance of the Torah have no place in
the new Jewish state.
It is no wonder that ultra-Ortho-
dox Israelis see a direct connection
between the Zionist leaders of the
early days of the state and the new
government coalition's adamancy to
draft them into military service and
take them out of yeshivah. Young
yeshivah students will undoubtedly
become less religious as the nature
of the Israeli army is not conducive
to those who lead a strictly Torah-
observant life.
The solution is not to force yeshi-
vah students to join the army by
means of intimidation or sanctions
(as has been suggested by the new
coalition), as this will only widen
the division between the two sides.

Orthodox Jews always look to their
rabbis for guidance. The Israeli
government, therefore, needs to sit
down with the head rabbis of the
state and discuss real solutions for
those yeshivah students who sin-
cerely do want to join the army. I
believe a surprising number of them
exist.
Even more important than the
draft, in my opinion, is finding a
solution for ultra-Orthodox men
who wish to go into the labor mar-
ket.
Secular Israelis often complain
that along with not serving in
the army, Orthodox men do not
contribute to Israel's economy.
Ironically enough, the country's laws
are actually mostly to blame: Those
who learn in yeshivah and receive
an exemption from the army are not
legally allowed to work, which, in
turn, prevents many ultra-Orthodox
Israelis from joining the work force
despite their desire to do so.
One more brigade in the IDF
is not going to essentially change
Israel's security situation, but adding
thousands of workers to the Israeli
market can do wonders for the
country's economy and will also cre-
ate a greater sense of unity in a soci-
ety that so painfully needs it.
