M
ike Palmer of Premier Pet
Supply in Southfield isn't
Jewish, but he grew up
with a lot of Jewish friends in West
Bloomfield. He often heard them
joke about their dogs using terms like
"Bark Mitzvah" and "Muzzle Tov"
In his family-owned pet supply
store, Palmer learned that pet food
for families who keep a kosher home
didn't have to be kosher, but that there
are some restrictions during the eight-
day Passover holiday.
To find out more, Palmer contacted
Rabbi Jason Miller, director of Kosher
Michigan, to visit the store and edu-
cate him, which led to Premier Pet
Supply offering a certified kosher-for-
Passover pet food.
"During Passover, Jews are forbid-
den from eating, possessing or even
deriving benefit from chametz (leav-
ened products), which includes the
five grains of barley, oats, rye, spelt or
wheat" Miller said. "So feeding a pet
chametz would be deriving benefit
from it. Those families who feed their
dogs in the garage during Passover
are still deriving benefit. However,
there are many chametz-free pet food
products on the market; it's just chal-
lenging to know about all of the minor
ingredients since pet food doesn't have
the same compliance and reporting
standards as people food"
Miller also explained that while
legumes (kitniyot in Hebrew) are not
eaten on Passover by most Jews of
Ashkenazi descent, they may be fed
to pets on the holiday. There is also
no need to change over the dishes for
pets; the year-round food bowls can be
used on Passover, but they should be
cleaned out first.
Premier Pet Supply features kosher
food for all animals — cats, dogs,
birds, fish, rabbits, bunnies and more.
Cost for the pet food starts out as little
as $1.09 or $1.75 for a can of dog or
cat food, respectively, up to $30 for
a bag of dry kibble that would last
through the holiday.
"People only have to feed these
foods for eight days, but they are great
options to feed throughout the year:'
Palmer said. "For those who will be
switching their pets to kosher food,
I advise starting the process before
Passover begins as switching some
pets' food cold turkey can lead to
digestive upsets" ❑
