ince June 2009, when Temple
Beth El, in cooperation with
Jim Hiller of Hiller's Markets,
launched its Mitzvah Meals program,
more than 70,000 meals have been
provided to 4,500 individuals in our
community.
Hiller had conceived the project
based on another such program he
underwrites in Northville; the model
has proved a successful one. Each
Mitzvah Meal package, valued at $50,
costs $30 and provides a family of four
with sufficient food for five meals.
Though not kosher, the meals contain

no pork products or shellfish. The
food is provided by Hiller's and pack-
aged one Tuesday each month at the
temple by an enthusiastic crew of
volunteers.
Recipients are greeted at the door
and volunteers using "little red wag-
ons" deliver their selections to their
cars. For most of the recipients, even
$30 is an impossibility. Funding for
the food comes largely from the gen-
erosity of individual donations to the
Temple Mitzvah Meals Fund. For more
information about the program, call
Temple Beth El at (248)-851-1100.
