Feeding The Hungry

THANK YOU FROM

Birmingham Temple members gather to make
lunches for Downtown soup kitchen.

B

irmingham Temple members of all ages gathered Jan. 13 to prepare
lunches for the soup kitchen run by the Central United Methodist
Church in Downtown Detroit. The Community Impact Committee
chose January because this month, after the December holidays, is when it is
most difficult to get volunteer sponsors.
Members made 450 sandwiches and packed lunch bags with additional
items. Some food was donated; some purchased with monetary contribu-
tions from Temple members. Besides what was bought, there were special
homemade sandwich fillings — egg salad, chicken salad, tuna salad — and
desserts baked especially for this project.
With an assembly line in place, work was easy, efficient — and fun. There was
a friendly hum of chatter, lots of smiling faces and warm hearts — a bonding
sense of community within the temple that reached beyond its walls.
