ere at the Jewish News, Chanukah is our favorite time
of year. Every day, we look forward to receiving new
submissions for our cover art contest, and each new
submission puts us more in the holiday spirit. When "voting day"
comes, everybody in the office stops what they're doing to come
into our conference room and admire the creativity and talent
evident in the artwork we receive each year.
"We love it. We think our annual art contest is really special,
and we take pride in it," says Deborah Schultz, IN creative direc-
tor. "That's why this year we expanded it online, so more people
in the community have the chance to vote for their favorites like
we do:'
Schultz gets to choose the grand prize winner. She said she
looks for originality, creativity, subject matter and evidence that
the artwork was created by the child without much help from
grownups or the use of store-bought materials.
"When I saw this year's winning submission, 'Captain
Chanukah: I was smitten by its originality and creativity and the
thought that went into it," Schultz says.

The creator of that artwork, Adam Krugel, 9, of Novi, has been
participating in the IN Chanukah Art Contest for four years. "My
other entries had been menorahs:' he says. "This year, I thought
I would be completely different. I wanted it to stand out so more
people would vote for it."
The fourth-grader from Hickory Woods Elementary, who
attends Temple Israel, says he likes comic books and likes to
do cartooning. He was inspired to create Captain Chanukah
after watching the movie The Avengers. "I also thought of the
Maccabees a little bit:' he says. "And I thought a comic book cover
would be good for the cover of the Jewish News:'
Adam's parents, Ellen and Noah Krugel, were excited and
proud, as was older brother Jesse, 10. "We're probably more excit-
ed than he is," says Ellen, who says it was exciting to watch Adam
as he worked on his submission. "It just came flowing out of him:'
As this year's winner, Adam will receive $100 and a photogra-
phy session with Enchanted Photography by Marla Michele Must
in Birmingham. Adam said he plans to use his winnings toward a
new iPad or iPod.
The first-place winners in each age group will receive $36 each.
Second- and third-place winners will each receive a check for $18,
as will the three winners of our online voting.
