Heart Of Gold
E
ileen Schiller Berris Glaser, 91, of
Franklin, died at home Nov. 6, 2012, sur-
rounded by family and listening to her
favorite swing music.
Born Oct. 25, 1921, in Detroit, she was the
daughter of the late Rose and Carl Schiller and
the sister and sister-in-law of the late Donald and
Maxine Schiller. She had two won-
derful marriages - to the late Dr.
Henry Berris for 38 years and then
for 27 years to the late Abraham
Glaser of Grand Rapids.
Eileen was a committed volunteer
and organizer in the Jewish and
broader communities. Hadassah,
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, Alpha
Omega, the Jewish Community
Center, Tapes for the Blind and
Eileen Glaser
the Allied Jewish Campaign were
among the many organizations
and institutions that benefited from her energy,
enthusiasm and powers of persuasion.
She also taught public speaking, was a profes-
sional book reviewer, had her own radio show and
chaired the Jewish Book Fair. For her committed
volunteerism, she won the United Foundations'
Demmy Award and the city of Detroit's Heart of
Gold honor.
Eileen touched the lives of everyone she came
into contact with and wasn't shy about reaching
out to friends and strangers alike, whether to offer
help, compliment them on a job well done, write
a poem on their special occasions or get down on
the floor to play with their children.
She loved music and loved to dance, doing so at
every opportunity. These past few winters in Key
West, Fla., and recently in France, Eileen amazed
everyone by never wanting to stop, even when those
SELMA COHEN, 77, of
Oak Park, died Nov. 6,
2012.
She was a speech
and English teacher at
Central High School for
33 years. She also loved
the theater and the
Cohen
symphony, was active

in Ridgedale Players,
performed at Bonstelle Theater, sang in
the Bel Canto Choir and did numerous
TV commercials. She was also active with
B'nai B'rith Women.
Mrs. Cohen is survived by her devoted
brothers, Norman Cohen of Milford and
Ronald Cohen of Huntington Woods;
loving sister, Elaine G. Bernstein of
Huntington Woods; many dear nieces
and nephews; loving and caring neigh-
bors, Bill and Libby.
She was the dear sister-in-law of the
late Linda Cohen; the devoted daugh-
ter of the late Abe and the late Esther
Cohen.
Interment was at Hebrew Memorial

half her age had had enough. On Nov. 6, Eileen
peacefully glided off the dance floor and changed
venues: Her dance partners of yesterday, today and
tomorrow are blessed by her lessons in life.
Eileen and Henry had six children, two of
whom pre-deceased them, each at the age of 2 -
James Carey and Ray Randall.
Eileen is survived by her daughter,
Jan Berris of New York City; her son
and daughter-in-law, Dr. Ronald
and Margaret Berris of Franklin; her
son, Billy Berris of West Bloomfield;
her son, Sandy Berris of Key West
and Eymet, France; and by countless
friends.
She is also survived by her grand-
children and great-grandchildren,
Drs. Joshua and Karen Berris and
their daughters Emily and Olivia;
Michael, Jackie and Jeffrey Berris;
Carley Wayne; Brian and Pam Koncius and son
Everett; Dave and Laura Hake and daughter Mia;
as well as by Abe Glaser's family, Tom and Connie
Glaser and sons Max and Rusty, and Carrie and
Ron Ludwig.
Eileen was also blessed with many loving
cousins, nephews, nieces and grandnephews and
grandnieces from the Berris-Schiller-Glaser fami-
lies.
Interment was at Clover Hill Park Cemetery.

DR. LEON T. FOGEL,
84, of Bloomfield Hills,
died Nov. 5, 2012.
Dr. Fogel is sur-
vived by his sons and
daughters-in-law, Dr.
Douglas and Suzanne
Fogel of Birmingham,
Fogel
Dr. Andrew Fogel and
Rebecca Skaggs-Fogel of Riviera Beach,
Fla.; grandchildren, Olivia, Samuel,
David, Rebecca, Adam and Max Fogel;
many loving nieces, nephews, other fam-
ily members and friends.
Dr. Fogel was the husband of the late
Gloria F. Fogel.

Birmingham Temple or to a charity

at the Beth El Cemetery in Livonia.

arry Sherberg,
90, of Oak Park,
died Nov. 8,
2012.
Mr. Sherberg was born
in Demblin, Poland, on
June 10, 1922. His par-
ents, who were both born
on the same day in 1900,
Harry Sherberg
were married in 1919.
His father died Nov. 11,
1943, in Majdanek in Poland. His mother, along with his sister and
two brothers, died on May 6, 1942, in the gas chamber in Treblinka.
His sister, Paula, married her first cousin, Mosze Roter, on May 5,
1942, the day before she was taken to the gas chamber in Treblinka.
During World War II, from 1939-1940, Mr. Sherberg was in a
forced labor camp in Demblin, Poland. From 1940-1941, he was in
Yanishup; 1941-1942, he was in Straflager, Poland; 1942-1944, he
was in a forced labor camp in Demblin; in 1944, Czenstochau labor
camp; 1944-1945, Buchenwald concentration camp. He was in a
death march to Golditz and Theresienstadt and was finally freed in
1945 from Theresienstadt.
After the war, Mr. Sherberg became a member of Shaarit Haplatah,
an organization for Holocaust survivors.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, M. David Sherberg
and Troy Adams of Freehold, N.J.; daughter and son-in-law, Paula
and Jeffrey Weiser of Oak Park; grandchildren, David Taitelbaum,
Julie Egren, Matthew Weiser, Todd Weiser and Dana Sussman, Kyle
Sherberg and Ryan Sherberg.
Mr. Sherberg was the beloved husband for 61 years of the late
Esther Sherberg; loving father of the late Toby Husband; dear brother
and brother-in-law of the late Paula and the late Mosze Roter, the
late Jack Szerberg, the late Moses Szerberg.

ROSLYN GARFINKEL, 84, of West
Bloomfield, died Nov. 9, 2012.
She was a secretary at Sinai Hospital
for more than 25 years.
