JEWELRY
Restaurants, bars and an Emagine movie theater round out the eclectic
shopping available in Royal Oak.
I
f you needed to replace a belt on
your vacuum, pick up some light
bulbs and maybe grab a box of
doughnuts, Royal Oak circa 1983 had
it all. Since then, the city's downtown
shopping district has undergone a
metamorphosis, drawing big daytime
and nighttime crowds to its more
than 100 shops and boutiques (not to
mention more than 60 restaurants,
cafes and eateries), all situated in a
very walkable downtown area.
The evolution began in the mid-
'80s with a turn toward the alterna-
tive, when establishments like Noir
Leather, Flipside Records and
Gusoline Alley brought a younger
crowd to the pleasant but quiet
sidewalks around 11 Mile Road and
Main. The Royal Oak of today has
made itself appealing for a wider
range of clientele, though it still
prides itself on a fashionably "alt"
vibe.
Whether you're buying for your-
self or everyone on your list, Royal
Oak has the goods — literally. Put
together an outfit at American
Apparel, Incognito, Pitaya or a
dozen other clothing retailers. Shops
like Elie Wine, Pronto! Corner
Store and Goldfish Tea Company
can satisfy the cravings of any food
connoisseur. Walk right into Sole
Sisters, Pink Pump, If the Shoe Fits
or any of the city's six shoe stores
and walk out with some super new
kicks. Moms and tots alike will enjoy
items at Kids Planet, a kids' resale
clothing shop with lots of fun new
items mixed in. Shine offers hard-
to-find gifts and tabletop items, and
Write Impressions has a gorgeous
selection of paper goods and gifts.
And don't forget Barnes and Noble,
which can be a one-stop shop on its
own.
