Alumni Foundation
Of Pasteur School
Sets Celebration
T
he Pasteur Elementary School
Alumni Foundation will hold
a celebration from noon-4
p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21, at the Louis
Pasteur Elementary School on West
Pembroke in northwest Detroit. There
will be entertainment and food, and
former teachers and students from as
far back as the 1940s will attend.
Marcy Feldman founded the group
in 1996 with fellow elementary school
classmates to advocate on behalf of the
students and promote reading. This
unique Detroit Public School alumni
association has a database of more
than 1,300 people who live all over
the United States and in Canada and
Israel.
Since the school's founding in 1939,
many of its students have gone on to
influential careers in the Metro area
and across the county. They are bound
together by their love for the school
and the neighborhoods that surround
it. There are 245 members who sup-
port the foundation with dues.
Sharon Lawson, principal of Pasteur
and a dedicated advocate for children,
works tirelessly to provide today's
students with the tools they will need
to compete successfully in today's
complex society. At the event, Pasteur
students, teachers and staff, past and
present, will join to celebrate their
years at this special place and encour-
age community members to volunteer
their time to enhance the experiences
of Pasteur children.
Last year, $19,000 from alumni
foundation members funded the
purchase of more than 400 new
books for the children, sent a group
of third-, fourth- and fifth-graders
to the Kennedy Space Center, paid
for a sixth-grade trip to the Jewish
Ensemble Theatre production of
The Diary of Anne Frank, funded a
"Summer in the City" camp program,
a Career Day program and a. special
tour of the Motown Museum. It also
made possible the distribution of holi-
day food boxes to 50 needy families.
"We are so grateful for the pres-
ence of the alumni foundation at our
school:' Lawson said. "Our alumni
have enhanced the lives of our stu-
dents immeasurably:'
All friends of Pasteur are welcome
at the Oct. 21 celebration.
