Sh'ma! Detroit. Learning. Together. The
event will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, at
the Jewish Community Centers in West
Bloomfield and Oak Park. Sponsored
by Federation's Alliance for Jewish
Education, FedEd Department; the
Jewish Community Center's 61st Annual
Jewish Book Fair; and SAJE (Seminars
for Adult Jewish Enrichment), this is the
third community day of Jewish learning.
The theme of this year's Sh'ma! event
is "Count Your Blessings" and what that
means in our daily lives. Eighteen dif-
ferent workshops, led by area rabbis and
educators, will run throughout the day.
New this year, Sh'ma! will present
a scholar's brunch and learn with Dr.
Andrea Lieber, professor of religion at
Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. Lieber
will speak at 11 a.m. in West Bloomfield
about her new book One Hundred

Blessings a Day —Why Jewish Spirituality
Begins with Gratitude.
Scholar-in-Residence Rabbi David
Fohrman, a dynamic and world-
renowned biblical scholar, will give
the keynote address at the JCC in West
Bloomfield at 12:45 p.m., when he will

speak on "Count Your Blessings: What
the Garden of Eden Teaches Us about
the Pursuit of Happiness': Fohrman
will give the endnote address at the JCC
in Oak Park at 8 p.m. on the topic of
"Bittersweet Blessings: A Foray into the
Secret Depths of Hanel."
A special program will be offered at
the JCC in Oak Park entitled, "Bubbies,
Bagels and Books" featuring Mark
Rosenthal, animal activist who rescues
exotic animals. Geared for families with
children ages 3-7, Rosenthal will teach
children how helping animals is a bless-
ing.
There is a fee for the workshops and
the brunch and learn. Reservations
for the brunch are required by Nov.

is open to the entire community. Walk-
ins are welcome and workshops are "first
come, first seat." Sh'ma! is a member of
the international program, Global Day of
Jewish Learning.

Hear The Story
Of Uganda's Jews
Aaron Kintu Moses, a leader of the
1,000-member Abayudaya Jewish
community of Uganda will speak at
7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Temple
Israel in West Bloomfield. Moses
will share the story of his commu-
nity evolution, from the struggle to
maintain Jewish identity in the face
of persecution to the remarkable
development of ties with neighbors
of different faiths.

Israel and the Jewish Community
