hen Joanne Caras created
her Holocaust Survivor
Cookbook and its sequel,
Miracles & Meals, a collection of
stories and recipes collected from
Holocaust survivors around the world,
she had no idea how her life would
change. To date, she has raised more
than three-quarters of a million dollars
for a variety of charities. The largest
share has gone to Carmei Ha'ir, a soup
kitchen in Jerusalem that feeds more
than 500 poor people every day.
Now, Caras is a network TV star. Her
new show, Miracles & Meals with
Joanne Caras, airs new episodes
9 p.m. Mondays on JLTV, the only
24-hour, seven-day-per-week network
devoted to Jewish programming. The
show is repeated six other times each
week. Each show features Joanne pre-
paring recipes from her cookbooks
and then telling the stories of the sur-
vivors who submitted the recipes.
"In the introductions to each of our
cookbooks:' Caras explains, "we sug-
gest that each time a recipe is served,
someone at the table should read the
story that goes with the recipe.

"This way not only will we be pre-
serving these precious recipes; we also
will keep the memories of the survi-
vors alive for generations to come.
"My show follows that model as we
prepare the recipes and then tell the
stories."
